You forgot about the part where people just stroll over our borders though. Lots of demand for copper on the other side.

You don't easily stroll over our border with multiple tons of copper.... so that trade is a fraction of the problem.

I live in a small town....Lived in the same house for 8 years (and the area for almost 30)...
Zero theft issues UNTIL 2, yes, thats right, 2 scrap yards opened up in the village...Now everything is vanishing around here....even farm gates and fencing from up in the koppies 5km away....Its all got a value now...

There is Always some scruffy thing lurking around with rusty old pliers and a empty 50kg meilie sake....Always looking to steal.....Cops also in on it in my opinion...A lot of apathy when we want to go and see if the scrappys are doing the paperwork etc....
The problem is, that the scrapyard guys are looking the other way when taking in those items, knowing fully those items are stolen, but still want to make a buck or two.
If I want to sell a item worth R100 for example, and do not want to fill in some paperwork that it is legitimately obtained, etc, then they take it for R75 or R50. Business is business
