Eskom price hikes will hurt the poor

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa should reject Eskom’s request for an additional electricity tariff increase because it is grossly unfair to the poor, a body which represents South Africa’s Catholic bishops said on Wednesday.

They have a point but not for the reasons they think.

The "rich" can afford to go off the grid if Eskom's price increases continue, the poor do not have this option. So they will end up with the bills while everyone else with the capability will reduce or remove their reliance on Eskom.

The only real way that Eskom can save the poor is by reducing the vast amount of fat and graft in the company, thus producing more electricity at the same price via:

* reduced staff
* proper maintenance
* no "cash for pals" supply contracts
* new power plants built within budget and deadline

If they do not do this they will find themselves with reduced demand and inflated costs :wtf:

Everyone who is paying for electricity will be affected... those who keep stealing it won't notice the difference (until Eskom shuts them down...hopefully).

Each person in my off-campus accommodation pays R270 a month for lights... and there is 8 of us.... We will probably be going into R300 a month from July
