Speaking of which. Saw in my local newspaper yesterday that we are getting rates increases here in the cape. Basically everything is going up 11%, including water, sewerage, refuse removal, etc... the whole effing lot.

It's around 10c extra per unit (kWh). Hardly going to force most people into bankruptcy. Calm down.

This ^. Same nonsense was spewed last time we had these massive increases. Will it hurt. Yes. Will it be catastrophic? No.

To all the people complaining about my comment of it only being 10c - if R50 to R80 extra a month will put you into bankruptcy, then you have huge money problems and shouldn't be wasting your time on the internet ..

Clearly then you are being subsidised either by parents or by a government institution, to be able to waste your time on the internet....

Instead of increasing rates by 25%, why not cut costs by 25%?

How about:
Using non-BEE coal
Stop paying huge bonuses to execs
Get a cheaper catering contract

In Cape Town (sure JHB is much the same) electricity is 153.63c per kwh up to 600kwh thereafter 186.81c per kwh.

25% extra is therefore an additional 38.41c per kwh (under 600kwh) and 46.70c per kwh (over 600kwh) so your 10c figure is quite incorrect.

This means that if you use 600kwh you will be paying an extra R230. But if you own a freestanding house, your winter consumption will typically be closer to 1500kwh on average which means a whopping R650 extra - hardly R50-80!!

And while one increase shouldn't destroy your finances it's the endless succession of increases that will do it: 4/5 years ago 1500kwh of electricity cost ~R1200. With the latest increase it will now cost ~R3253. This additional R2000 expense is financially crippling for many households as it is a cost that has gone up 171% in the period that salaries have gone up 30%.

Don't come here with your basic logical solutions damnit.

They can go stuff themselves - I will be putting some savings into more solar panels and batteries. I refuse to pay more for the same hopeless service.

Lots of murmurs about the contracted diesel price to Eskom as well.
Ankerlig and Gourikwa use over 600 000L per HOUR between the 2 of them.

Nice little money spinner if you get in with a diesel contract for a piece of that pie.

The numbers are absolutely staggering when you think about it.

The BILLIONS of Rands the ANC government is unnecessarily costing us daily due to their ineptitude is astonishing.
The only thing I can think of why they are not tarred and feathered and chased out of town is because it is dark and the masses can't see.

The scale of this F-Up make things like Nkandla look like a pimple on an elephants butt.

25% increase just means we going to hit the R400 flat rate on day 2 instead of day 3.

Edit:never mind, that's only for Soweto.
