Eskom R9-billion loan "misguided" - Dawie Roodt

I agree.

Simple solution - get private sector to build it, and pay for the electricity at a reasonable rate via a bid system.

REIPPP....

20 year contact for Eskom to purchase electricity at reasonable rates ( the cheapest REIPPP bid for solar was 37.5 c/kWh and 34.4 c/kWh for wind last time around, both of which carry no risk to Eskom, as they spend > R3 /kWh for burning Diesel at the moment.)

No debt load to carry, and cheaper than Eskom can generate it for. Win/win.

Let's take it a step further. Let the private sector sell electricity directly to the consumer.

The private sector pay Eskom a fee to use their distribution system.

Exactly how fibre ISPs work. This provides competition.

Communist countries have load shedding?
Shanghai had "some" a little while back during summer. i.e. the bund lights were told to turn off, as those waste a fokton of power.

Vietnam definitely lots of power outages, although far less than here.

DPRK turned the road lights off after 8pm, at least when i was visiting pyongyang.

So yes, some do.

Can't find a shot where I took darkness in DPRK, but here's one I took before they turned off the lights.

How many Megawatts make up a Fokton? ;)Asking for a friend.

Based on Shanghai's summer power consumption plan on peak hours this summer, the city's landscape lights and outdoor advertising lights will be switched off when the power supply gap is estimated to hit about 6 million kilowatt-hours within the next 24 and 72 hours.

Which is a wierd url, I know, but did have some figures at least.

So. 6MW*, which is roughly double what we're missing as an _entire_ country during loadshedding, although not at once.

Assume 6pm - 10pm each night, so 4hrs * 2 days. = 8hrs or 0.75MW an hour at a guesstimate.

Or... one Koeberg reactor unit (we have 2)

Dawie speaks sense. But no-one will listen to him, firstly because he is a pale white male for starters, so in their eyes he is insignificant and can be ignored. Secondly, what he is proposing makes Eskom a smaller company with less power and influence.

Ah, now it makes sense. Landscapers have long favoured mercury vapour bulbs vs LEDs, and the energy hit is quite significant.

Still waiting on the 3 Eskoms. Power Generation, Distribution and whatever the other one was.

So basically on average we're the worst or best performing communists?
