Eskom says its Red Alerts on DStv are paying off

Eskom has thanked South Africans for heeding its regular power alerts aired on various television broadcasts.

In a statement on Wednesday 27 January, Eskom said that South Africans switching off unnecessary lights and appliances during evening peak periods in response to Red Alerts has proven helpful in mitigating load-shedding.

“Eskom thanks all consumers who have responded to Power Alerts by switching off all unnecessary lights and appliances between 5pm and 9pm – the period of peak demand for electricity in most homes in South Africa,” Eskom said.

Pro Tip: Publish the numbers:

Installed capacity isn't 58GW, it's 45GW.

I would like to see a split usage between Industry and Private....

That isn't always possible,

As an example, from Eskoms point of view eThekwini buys 5% of their generation capacity (on average). They have zero sight of how that power is then distributed between residential/industrial/corporate. I would assume the same applies to all major metros that maintain their own power reticulation systems.

Fair enough. I said I would like to see it, I did not say it is a practical request. :)

I think the point I was trying to make is that me turning off my geyser is farting in a hurricane compared to a smelter turning off a furnace....

You would actually be surprised...

If an entire city turned off their geysers for a period, it could make a significant dent, and I think that is part of the reason for the DSTV stuff, thousands of small savings add up to a big saving with minimal "effort" as it were

But smelters can't turn off furnances willy nilly, these are long planned shutdowns for very specific reasons for maintenance etc.

How can this be? I see those alerts like a challenge and turn more stuff on.

So basically calling load shedding? I mean why be a dick? When your engine light comes on do you also drive like you stole it?

Because one doesn't condone corruption. And you can't compare an engine light coming on with an incompetent organization asking you to switch off stuff because they fcked up the organization. I pay for electricity. So will use it as i please. Whoever wants a say in how i use it needs to help to pay for it. Speaking of which, eskom then has the nerve to increase prices far above inflation to make up for the decreased demand. Fck them.

I used to be the otherway round and turn stuff off, and still had loadshedding, so decided what's the point. I was only kidding, I just carry on as per normal. Regarding the engine light, the car would be in limp mode so couldn't do that even if I wanted to, but then I would take it to the dealer and get it fixed, not have the light coming on for 14 years.

No one is condoning the corruption, but just turning everything on when those alerts come on, is cutting your nose off to spite your face.
I mean do you think you adding strain makes you a rebel? Possibly bringing load shedding.
