Stage 2

It was only a partial stage 3 yesterday evening. In other words, only areas directly supplied by Eskom experienced stage 3, not the municipalities.

That said, wasn't Joburg still on everywhere today despite stage1?

Correct, the City Power website says Eskom is load shedding but they are not...wonder when City Power customers will pay for that.

City Power is doing 'load limiting' i.e., everyone with smart meters has throttled electricity. If you are using too much, you get turned off for 30min or something until you reduce your usage. So, instead of turning off entire areas to reduce load, they are 'sharing' whats available.

(best way I understand it until details are clearer on how it works)

Aah, that explains last night when I kept expecting the power to go off at any time - pleased it didn't but bad for my nerves.

News24 is saying it is stage 2, and that my area is currently in load shedding - which is not happening at the moment.

Will things get as bad as needing Stage 4 load shedding?

City power is causing a lot of confusion as they're no longer in lockstep with eskom about the load shedding stage due to their load reduction demand side management stuff.

Stage 3 load shedding starts at 8am

Cape Town - Eskom will implement stage 3 load shedding from 08:00 on Friday morning, and this is likely to continue until 22:00 this evening.

This followed stage 1 and stage 2 load shedding on Thursday, with Eskom assuring customers that load shedding is implemented as a necessary measure to protect the power system.

Deferred generator maintenance has caused an overload of unplanned repairs, resulting in a week of darkness for South Africa.

On Wednesday, unplanned outages resulted in 9 500MW being cut off the grid, while planned outages accounted for 5 000MW, according to Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe.

After implementing a fourth day of stage 2 (2 000MW cut) load shedding at 06:00 on Wednesday, Eskom escalated the outages to stage 3 (4 000MW cut) at 16:00.

"Any additional changes on the already vulnerable and constrained power system could lead to a change in the stage of load shedding at short notice. We will communicate if there is a need to change stages," Eskom said in a statement on Wednesday.

"The electricity supply system remains very constrained and vulnerable due to a shortage of generation capacity as several units are currently out of service due to planned and unplanned outages."

I am going to get insanely strong forearms from all the fapping in the 18:00-22:30 timeslot.
