Eskom tells business not to rely on state

Maroga has said as CE, he will be accountable for a power shortage which has led to chronic outages and may threaten faster economic growth — even though he only took the post last May.

Ha! I like this guy, he is taking responsibility for sorting out a situation which is not his doing. Essentially this does implicate goverment and not Eskom as the cause of this problem (which is true).

ESKOM CE Jacob Maroga has urged business not to rely on the government to find solutions to power shortages likely to persist until 2013
so there is no objection the small nuclear power plant in my back yard then?

has urged business not to rely on the government to find solutions to power shortages

So what I read is " I urge you to ignore government as they cannot be relied upon to do their job...even though you are paying taxes for basic infrastructure we expect you to make your own plans. This is also due to the fact that government takes too long to make decisions and cannot really find any solutions...solutions that you must now come up with yourselves "

So will we be ready before the 2010 World Cup?
2010 - 2013 = -3

Buy power from where for all the expected people? I do not think overseas visitors will appreciate blackouts. But then neither can the economy sustain even more blackouts to cater for tourists!

Hoo boy!

Not necessarily true. Taking accountability for the problem only substantiates why he is the Eskom CE. It is also an attempt to try to 'justify' the bonus payouts received by Eskom top management.

Having taken over the CE position last May (ie. 2007). I would like to know why there was no attempt (or at least none admitted to) to once again convince government that investment in new power stations are desperately needed then. Instead, Eskom waited until the wheels started to fall off the cart before any sort of action was taken. Eskom KNEW the situation the country was facing.

It's easy to step up when your back is to the wall as only 2 options are left: quit or finally do something.
