Eskom threatens to cut off Johannesburg's power

Eskom says it has served a notice of intention to interrupt power supply to the City of Johannesburg and City Power at certain pre-determined times of day in accordance with the Provision of Promotion of Administrative Justice Act (PAJA).

"The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) and/or City Power currently owe Eskom an amount of R4.9 billion, excluding the current account of a further R1.4 billion which will become due and payable at the end of November 2024," the power utility stated.

Ironic they go after Joburg but did they turn off Bloemfontein?

However, the per capita debt obligation of the Free State is the highest, with their R22.6 billion bill equating to approximately R7,700 for each of their 2.9 million population.

The Free State also has five municipalities owing over R1 billion, with Maluti-A-Phofung Local Municipality’s account standing at over R8 billion.

I support this. It’ll be one of the few instances where the people who caused the problem (in Joburg’s ANC strongholds) will be disproportionately affected by the consequence.

Watch them backtrack after the dark one pays them a visit. Though perhaps not with elections relatively far in terms of political timelines. They have themselves to blame too for enabling a culture of non payment rewarding communities who don't pay in the run up to the electio

This is when the one faction meets the other faction face to face.

Joburg hits back at Eskom threats

"Eskom's approach of 'pay now and resolve disputes later' in its dealings with the City of Johannesburg can no longer go unchallenged," the metro stated.

"There is also an option of IGR to resolve intergovernmental disputes which Eskom keeps disregarding."

Sounds like they learnt their tricks from Telkom!

Rich coming from them, they have that exact attitude to consumers.

This is just sensationistalistic journalism as we've been down this road before and it was determined by the courts that it's illegal to cut a city off.
