Eskom unions reject 5.25% salary increase

Eskom has assured that its three recognized trade unions have committed to a fourth round of wage negotiations in June after they couldn’t reach an agreement this week.

Last year, Eskom workers went on an unprotected strike, with union leaders disavowing all involvement in the labour action.

So if Eskom employees get a 12% increase their salaries will have increased by more than 20% in 2 years (not including any promotions/grade movements). Not bad for such a useless bunch.

The Unions always come out on top so Eskom might as well just oblige them already.

So... The power utility wants an increase, yet can't keep the lights on? Sad to see the country is run by unions. But again, you get what was voted for. LOL

Lols below...

On top of the wage increase, the union demanded:

  • Housing allowance to be raised to R7,000, and employees to be allowed to buy houses anywhere in the country;
  • Medical aid to shift to 80% (20% contribution by employees);
  • Cellphone allowance of R1,000;
  • R1,500 electricity allowance;
  • Once-off R1,500 essential worker or danger allowance, as well as a separate voltage work allowance on a sliding scale;
  • Performance bonus set at 25% of annual salary;
  • R20,000 study benefit per child; and
  • R10,000 car allowance through Eskom’s so-called vehicle X-scheme

So I inherently have an issue with almost all those benefits, esp since it seems they aren't included in the increase.

80% of medical aid they can fsck off.
Cellphone allowance should only be in place for those employees on standby rosters, and should be a claim back process rather than a blanket figure.
Electricity allowance can get fscked
Danger pay I'm good with for those employees who are exposed to dangerous situations over and above their normal work.
Performance bonus at 25% of annual is acceptable so long as the KPIs cover. And 0% until the country has experienced 1yr of continuous zero load shedding and the generation EAF has increased to a level of 70% at least
Study benefit is acceptable, but needs some claw back clause surround student performance.
Car allowance can also get fscked, use eskom pool cars if you need to travel between sites.

My job for 20 years before retrenchment I had 100% med aid and 100% cell phone, 60% company contribution to retirement policy, and petrol card. Cost to company was around 60k, then I went to UIF, they gave me 4k for I can't remember but it felt like less than a year, and those queues were soul destroying.
