Eskom vs Telkom: how SA government wrecked two essential utilities

Glad you see you put the blame where it belongs.

You can add a third: Postal service.

Got a few slips in the mailbox today for untracked parcels (ebay stuff). The slips were stamped in December 2014 and only reached my mailbox now. Post office says the items have been returned/destroyed months and months ago.

Thanks to Eskom now, for the time being, only loadshedding after 16:00 and pretty much always on Stage 2, I'm scheduled to suffer darkness every second day at 18:00. I'm not joking. It literally is every second day.

At least I have the fastest ADSL my area can get. 10mbps ftw

Gotta agree, ANC destroyed South Africa and now their burning the ashes too.

SARS lately too?

Basically every government run institution... Let's simply this...

This very website was forged in the ramblings of GVT's horrible ignorance and even worse decision making back in the day starting with Telkom and Sentech.

I joined in 2004 and the "digital activism" was rife lol.
Every single able, sane, educated and digital mind who understood the importance of the internet knew where it was going and what needed to be done to reap the rewards, except the people in charge of making those decisions <Viva Mbeki and Zuma :)... thanks...>

On a postive note. Look at where MyADSL/Broadband is today and have a look at our vibrant and ever growing South African digital community. A far car from 2002. Our digital economy is rife and growing. And all thanks to the efforts made at making internet cheaper for the masses. *Hint * Hint ANC and Minister of Comms :p

Internet will help us grow this country. Reliable, affordable and consistent internet will help us re-invest locally and create jobs. And electricity will help keep us all switched on no pun intented :p

We just asking for the basics ;) Please get the basics right.

-> Heres to the fact that in 2015 you can get a quality internet connection for an affordable price (albeit still too expensive comparatively)

-> Heres to the fact that in 2015 you can buy a internet abled computer for less than $35 (opening up the markets of IOT) which is going to explode and make the internet even cheaper (hopefully...)

-> And heres to the fact that MyBB forums and others like it will expose more and more people to the digital world online and hopefully fostering innovation and R&D.

The SA Gonvernment really needs to resolve the broadband penertration rate in this country. Hope it happens sooner rather than later. Or maybe Facebook and Google will come to our rescue with drone and baloon flying marvels ? Who knows what technological innovations await us in the near future?? So very exciting...

Viva MyBB! Viva!

If only we could send this info graphic back to 2002 in a delorian lol!

repeated blunders of insane stupidity (corruption) are a trademark of the anc gov and its councils.
latest scandal is the pretoria electricity prepaid meter contract
http://www.moneyweb.co.za/archive/tshwane-metering-contract-branded-blatantly-corrup/
tshwane paid more than R830 million already for less than 13000 prepaid meters... that averages a princely sum of >R64263 per prepaid meter... nice hey. try explaining to the rate payers how that saves the council money.
And its not even that they weren't warned that its a crap deal by the opposition, they just went and did what they wanted, as they usually do. ***** common sense.
anc doesnt even need to go out of their way to F up.... just comes naturally

What a disgrace!

The corruption is rife and sickening.

Great summary of (non) events Jan.

So sad to see this dithering, imagine where we as a country could be if these blunders did not persist.

I must say this is first class reporting by Jan. These info graphics should be printed, each on its own full page, in every newspaper in the country for a month.

Eskom has two new power stations underway, but construction has been marred by numerous delays and labour action.

What an ironic name for strikes.
