Money does not cure stupidity. This is a policy matter requiring political will, accountability and intelligence , which are in even shorter supply. When you set yourself up to fail, it is hardly surprising that failure is the most likely outcome. Financial bailouts cannot remedy fundamentally flawed policies. This applies equally to the wider context of the overall crisis in SA.

Yep. I can see it coming already: Rand water blames power outages for waterfailure (already happened). Eskom blames water situation for lack of cooling ability.

They paid cadres 23bil and now want us to pay.
If you weren't so fking lazy and stupid we could have averted this but maintenance and planning is a white man's thing.

Nice Blog. Neatened it up a bit since I saw it last..

http://goingsolar.co.za/2014/12/05/eskom-municipality-vs-solar-pricing-maths/

Given that was almost a year ago, how have the numbers changed?

Do you have a spreadsheet where you can tweak the inputs to get the eventual costs and associated break-even/pay-off period?

Electricity prices should still be the same, as those are increased on a yearly basis in Cape Town.
Solar panels are down to about 6.80+vat so about 30% cheaper. Batteries - I would just go LFP instead of Lead Acid, as you need less.
Pricing will still be roughly the same though, as our currency has turned into monopoly money, and pretty much everything is imported.

Please don't mock Monopoly! Good advice is to go to all toy shops and buy all Monopoly games, except the electronic versions, as it will soon be the currency to buy with in this country!

The bad news is, even if you go completely off grid, you are still paying for Eskom.

At their current burn rate, they'll need bailouts from the tax payer constantly.

That's the problem. indirectly we will always fund the shortfall. Our fiscal cliff is arriving and no one in power will make a decision that benefits this country. We will keep paying as we have no choice, but ultimately all the good citizens will Kark and betaal. For the first time I am looking offshore. I returned to SA with a degree, so no baiting.

I'm waiting to see estates going off grid. I think a few big ones are already considering this and longer term, with the cost continually rising, Eskom faces a never ending cost recoup cycle untill they reduce production losses/theft. Also most new businesses factor energy production into their costs so i'm thinking in 4-7yrs when things start improvement cycle the same limit will hit but the amount they can charge will have been hit. Government won't have the funds to bail them out even if they increased taxes as too many demands from social to other parastatals need funding. Gonna be an interesting time..

Let me guess...R22.8 billion can be broken down as follows: R2.8 billion - bonuses for fatcat management + R10 billion for overcharged diesel purchases from ANC cadre subcontractors + R10 billion for unbudgeted food and recreation budget for the thousands of workers working on the Medupi project.
