Eskom wants solar panel users to pay more for electricity

Eskom presented its new plans for electricity tariffs to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa on Tuesday, outlining the new electricity price structure it wants to implement.

The power utility’s new retail tariffs propose significant changes for electricity users across South Africa, with specific measures implemented to prevent the loss of revenue from South Africans using solar panels to generate their own electricity.

One of Eskom’s proposed measures is the splitting of energy tariffs into fixed and variable costs, which would make Eskom more attractive when compared to alternate energy sources like solar power, it said.

They basically want to charge a network fee to be connected to the grid, regardless of how much you use. It sounds reasonable.

If you do not want to use the grid as a battery, buy your own.
Not every ESS uses the grid as a battery.

What happened to the government's much vaunted user-pays principle?

We are already paying a network fee. If you go off-grid 100%, there is still a monthly fee due to Eskom for your connectivity.

Its retarded shyte like this that makes people who can afford it go completely off-grid...

Screw network charges and all that nonsense, Eskom loses ALL revenue that they could generate from a person/company.

That heading is very very wrong.

Eskom wants to add a network fee as a consequence of what is happening right now. I can understand that.

If you are off grid it doesn't apply to you at all.

I would not want this network charge, as it will probably be higher than my whole electricity bill for the month. Most municipalities already add a network charge regardless. Tshwane also wanted to implement it last year.

"Eskom has also said it wants to move away from Incline Block Tariff (IBT) pricing, which sees South Africans being charged more for electricity the more they use it.

This change would be good news for heavy electricity users, who would see a reduction in their monthly bill, but lower users would see a relative increase instead."

I like this.

So this would be the same as line rental Telkom charges.
Similar, but with electricity you can feed excess clean solar energy into the grid and get paid for it.
Unfortunately, the metro's & eskom make it very difficult and costly to connect and feed the grid.

Seems Eskom prefers to pollute with coal and ignore the clean solar feed in energy.

****ing bullshit. Remember Eskom keeps telling people to use less. Now it wants to disincentivise those who do as they say.
