We are 3, and buy R800 of prepaid electricity every 5-6 weeks. You can come audit me any time.
YOH. We are 3 as well and pay 2.5K. What's your secret? We used to have 800 bill 7-8 years ago. You probably don't cook everyday either. And no aircons/heaters?

Just to satisfy your preconception that average families must be criminal if they use a small amount of power.

We use lights only when needed, and only have one light on at night in the house.
HP microserver is running 24/7 (UPS)
Gas geyser and stove. Oven will happen later.
We switch off what we don't need.

Sure, we used to have 800 bill 7-8 years ago but we had 1 heater and no aircon. You are doing great. I personally know of no family (of 3) that has less than 1400 rands of bill.

My preoccupation? Dude, I know for a fact it's happening but hardly talked about. It's one of potential solutions to electricity theft.

In winter we use a fireplace, and since our place is small, it is enough to heat up the whole house.
Exceptionally cold days might require the wall mounted heaters to be used.
No aircon required as the place is well insulated, and we actually open up to let heat in.

What have you done to lower usage, simplest first step is to take care of those yellow halogen lights. Convert stove to gas and take care of the geyser.
I have done nothing but not a single yellow halogen light at home. We cook almost every frikking day - it is genetic fault. ;) We have been using heaters to dry clothes last few days.. Eish.. bill is going to be awesome. Aircons is also the problem I think. We would love to have gas stove but is going to need some kitchen restructuring.

Yellow is just more of a personal irritation, all halogens are bad. Start slowly and take care of all heating appliances, electric heaters are very useless, they guzzle you electricity and you get very little in return. Get yourself a gas heater.

Do you have a elec geyser and does it run 24/7?

Put our geyser on a timer. On max 2 hours a day.
Save hundreds a month on elec bills.
Lowering the temp also helps.

I would get it ASAP.
The savings are significant.

Just bare in mind with the loadshedding you may need to turn it on and off manually if the programmed time falls during shedding times.
