Maybe check out one of those Coursera electrical engineering courses focusing on power engineering over the Christmas break if you have time…or check out Wikipedia. There are quite a few good resources covering these topics…

In my limited understanding of all this, didn't we just sign an agreement, with a loan, where we ensured that we could reduce our environmental impact in the next 10 years and transition away from coal power?

A couple months later, Eskom is enacting spoilt child syndrome so they can continue blasting coal at an even greater rate?

Yep. Makes total sense.

I don't think that's concluded yet. Also it's a very bad deal. It's just a loan we need to pay back with interest and we'll need way more than that if we're going to replace coal power rather than just subsidise it.
