I read somewhere they were buying diesel through BEE middlemen at R17 per liter....

Between that and the coal....

Eskom is being forced to buy from BEE suppliers, regrdless of what they want to do. That's the energy minister for you. To top it off, the ones winning the contracts are Zumabuds.

Normally coal is sold to ESCUM at R170 per ton. Guptas sell coal, from their illegal coal mine, to ESCUM for R475 per ton.

Documented fact.

And that Gupta coal is of poor quality and is probably what is causing all the plant failure

Or cancel their cheap long-term agreements that are in place for the largest industrial consumers like those aluminium smelters, bring them up to the current pricing, and take the legal hit. But when has anything ever been done for the greater good of the country...

Comparing our and their tarrifs is very difficult. They buy direct from the grid. We also pay for the distribution network and transformers required to get the electricity from, say - Koeberg - to the 220 volt AC that gets to your house in Randburg.
Unless you believe that the big companies should shoulder part of our costs, comrade.

They tried that.
Pylons came tumbling down. They stole the bolts off the pylons which in turned fell over.
When Eskom mentioned "pre-paid", people in Soweto started rioting.

Then leave them without electricity. If they don't want to pay for it they don't get it. End. Of. Story.

Drop the BEE requirements, renegociate the Diesel and Coal supply contracts publicly, accellerate the conversion of Ankerlig to Gas, speed up work at Medupi and Kusile (I have a few suggestions how to do that, we already have one boiler working ).

Start scheduled loadshedding and stick to the damn schedule.

Put a 6 month moratorium on scap metal sales and processed copper exports. (Yeah, we will **** with two markets, but its the only way to be sure)

Declare willfull damage to the electricity infrastructure as treason and treat accordingly. And now the one that is the least feasible - cut off the illegal connections.

3/4 months of stage 3 mean a few million jobs lost, small/medium businesses all shut down etc... perhaps they should just finish them 4.5year overdue and over budget power stations

If the loadshedding is properly planned so businesses can plan around it will work. If you have certainty then planning is easier. So tell us from say November to Jan there is going too be stage 3 loadshedding and give us the schedules. Half of December the country goes onto skeleton staff anyway. That way we can build up stocks of products to supply in the 3 months.

While it is never simplistic we can make a plan. I just think the "backlog maintenance " excuse is a cover up for incompetence.

Someone at Eskom once proudly told me theat they are paying their etoll bills.
So I replied - 'No. We are paying your etolls. And that is not why we pay you.'
