Eskom has run out of money for diesel

Eskom has said it cannot buy diesel for its open cycle gas turbines (OCGT) at Gourikwa and Ankerlig power stations until 1 April 2023.

Speaking to energy analyst Chris Yelland, an Eskom spokesperson said the power utility has spent R11 billion on diesel this financial year — twice the amount it had budgeted.

Couple of questions, what is the price that Eskom pays for a litre of diesel and who are the supplier(s)?

This seems to be Eskom trying to put pressure on the regulator to let them recover diesel cost overruns.
Unfortunately I cannot see how this can ever end well. Sabotage and theft aside, the two things that would need to happen for Eskom to start operating efficiently is municipalities paying their debt and Eskom retrenching 40-60% of their employees.
Either would plunge the country into darkness and riots.
So they do nothing and in the process will plunge the country into darkness.

Are OCGTs part of base load or for emergency use?

Eskom is using OCGT for base load because Eskom is in perpetual emergency with more than 15,000MW permanently broken.

Since Eskom OCGT is down until 1 April 2023, how about Eskom implementing the OCGT to CCGT upgrade that's been in the planed & approved since before 2007?
This will improve efficient significantly.

I stopped reading at "proposing" and "investigating"....

The funds for that have long ago run dry, and need to be replentished

This is ESKOM and South Africa's problem in a nutshell:

  • ESKOM's debt is practically insurmountable, but there has to be some semblance of repaying it.
  • Since ESKOM is still showing some small inkling of actually working and generating electricity, the debt collectors are staying away.
  • ANC is blocking IPP's left right and center, because IPP's will lead to ESKOM eventually not being needed anymore.
  • And this will mean that one day, ESKOM will be standing there. Fixed and new and ready to supply electricity, but no-one will need it anymore.
  • So how will it repay it's debts then? How will it generate enough income then?
  • So it's FUBAR

My summary is extremely simplified and in a very small nutshell...

Well, I guess darkness is better than darkness and riots. I think it will be double dose rioting. Rioting against the ANC and rioting ala KZN style.

Will never happen. Government will protect their cash cow / voters even it means SA sinks into darkness.
