Eskom's big changes for electricity tariffs proposed

Eskom has submitted a tariff restructuring application to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa, proposing sweeping changes to the calculations used to determine its approved electricity prices.

This comes after the utility conducted an updated cost-of-supply (CTS) study, which showed that the current approach, in place since 2012, was not resulting in cost-reflective revenue collection.

For example, a Homepower 1 user would pay R938 instead of R218 without using a single kilowatt-hour of electricity.

thus minimum R938... probably over a R1000 ( Per unit price is less, but they want to rape people who doesnt use)

Basically if I'm understanding it correctly, moderate users like you (and I) are going to be expected to pay more - not less (but for less). He even uses your example of 400kw. Worth a watch

I don't know, but one thing it does mean is that Eskom will get paid even if it can provide no power.

This means, when there is loadshedding or any power outage, Eskom will charge you R938 for not being able to use electricity.
Very nice way to subsidize those that are stealing electricity.

Eskom will say, "we do not care if you do not use our product, we will charge you anyway".

Are you an Eskom direct customer? If not than your municipality should be informing you of any changes

Cool I see this being fought just like E-tollie, I kinda want to say it's extortion at its finest because you charging people more for a service/product that you are unable to provide so charging less if you use more is not possible if you are load-shedding 99% of the time because you are unable to use more because there's no power. So how now brown cow? I'd also like to ask the higher forum guru's here, how the hell do we lodge our view to Nersa regarding this planned tariffs bs thing Eskom has proposed, is there no way we the public can stop this BS cause I know for a fact a number of households where I stay have recently moved to solar and this would piss them right off

How would this affect municipal customers like those in Durban since we pay municipality and not Eskom direct.

I guess we have to wait for municipality to put plans together.

Than chances are you're already paying more, as the network charge has been around a long time. So if you're not Eskom direct, this will more than likely not effect you.

How does Eskom justify R11,256 per year for some wires in an urban environment?

That's a massive rip off for infrastructure that's already paid off.

"on average" everyone pays less... But for some reason every is screaming that Eskom is screwing them?

HomePower tariffs ALREADY have daily fees between R200-900/month...

And those who read the article will see that is even says if you have solar there may be nice things from the Homeflex tariff...

And most importantly they aren't proposing much change to megaflex which is what your municipality pays!... Of which most of you would be impacted by.

Pay more for a none existing service. So in short, everyone pays more, even if you don't use nothing and even if they don't provide a service.....except for the people who vote for them, who will get it for free.

Eskom is such a mess, I think people are mostly moving to solar because eskom can't produce enough electricity reliably, not because they to avoid the cost of electricity.

Meanwhile eskom sees this as the rich somehow skrewing over the poor and not paying their fair share.
