Eskom's De Ruyter — Coal power "new apartheid" danger for South Africa

Eskom CEO André de Ruyter said that if South Africa clings to coal power generation, it will face the same kind of isolation and sanctions as during Apartheid, Netwerk24 reported.

Speaking at the Hendrik van der Bijl Memorial Lecture last week, De Ruyter reportedly said that ignoring the global shift to green energy will accelerate South Africa’s deindustrialisation.

All you have to do to get government on board is to show them how they can secure tenders to supply sunlight, wind and water.

He really should forward the lecture to Uncle Gweezy, not that that dumbf_uck actually gives a s_hit. Anyhoo, Eskom's already forcibly "retired" about 10,000 megawatt due to permanent unplanned outages.

New Apartheid he said, cute.

The New Apartheid started the day we allowed policies like BBBEE to become law. Everything from that day forward should be considered a form of New Apartheid seeing how these idiots love to rehash this word.

Eskom isn't making much of a case against Apartheid when Apartheid was so bad yet it could actually produce continuous power to the people connected to the grid.

The Apartheid terminology is only ever used to distance yourself from failure anyhow , just fascinating that this white pawn on the government chessboard is using it.

What is your excuse now Eskom ?

Eskom would retire 22,000 megawatt of its coal power plants over the next 14 years
Holy Mother! How long has Medupi and Kusile been under construction for now? How the hell are they going to build that plus account for growth in a decade?

Don't get too triggered, looks like the "new apartheid" thing is just MyBb's spin on things.

Since when does any African country care about carbon footprint and global warning?
/shrugs and leaves the room

Since when did any African country have to?

China is building new coal power plants like its going out of fashion.

To deal with the greenies is really easy. Just promise them you will do everything they want. Then don't. There is no reasonable middle ground.

So you want "clean" air while you stand with your boots in sewage, dirty ground, dirty rivers etc, which is easy to clean up in comparison, it looks 3rd world countries will never get off the ground in future simply because most will never be able to afford it.
-If your AC power(one of the basic man made resources present in every basic actiity, not luxcuries) are expensive(relative) you screwed, everything you touch becomes expensive exponentially over time, this is not linear either. Inflation is no excuse, inflation is a symptom and always after the fact.

I do wonder if Eskom and municipalities are allowed to deploy solar panel “solutions” directly to business parks etc.

Note I did not say battery packs but at least evaluating apartment blocks, business parks etc and going.. we we slap on solar panel, we augment supply there etc. sure there are complexities but really.. advantages >> complexity.

yes it limits to municipalities which cash positive balance or ability to bring on investors.. but that’s not what they pushing.. they keep going for massive generation which is dumb as solar allows decentralizing and building resilience.. the 100mw thing makes it viable surely

We burn extremely dirty coal and a lot of it. We should be transitioning to solar.

And wind.. while solar is great for meeting decentralized new energy generation.. wind & soon wave will be crucial in delivery of power.

It frustrates me that we moving at a worse than glacial pace(worse because glaciers move faster these days haha).

why the hell are we still using "apartheid" to define problems? I mean honestly let the sleeping dog just die of old age already!

I think he just means moving away from coal to renewables is a bigger issue than moving from Apartheid as both are socio-economic upheavals; and both have repercussions if we do/did nothing about it.

Basically he's saying its a very serious issue that can have dire consequences economically as the world economy gears towards shifting to renewable sources of energy.

That's because the majority of our power stations were designed to burn dirty coal. The burners can't handle higher grade anthracite, which aren't in abundance anyway.

Checks.. it’s near 100yrs post ww2 and Israelis still ab/use Holocaust.. just saying.
