Eskom's online vending system for prepaid electricity tokens compromised — with staff suspected to be involved

An investigation has uncovered that security controls in Eskom's online vending system (OVS) were breached and the system was used to generate illegal electricity tokens in bulk.

The power utility suspects some of its own staff may be involved in the crime and has appointed an external IT company to conduct a forensic probe into the breach and to make recommendations on fixing the OVS's vulnerabilities.

lol. is this now on the new TIDs? or still on the old TIDs?

I can run my WiFi via powerline so surely they can find a way to communicate with meters via the same circuits that deliver power.

What is SICKENING is that consumers have to pay for all of Eskom's numerous failures and inefficiencies. Bad management, corruption, lack of maintenance, breaches, etc, and they just put up the tariffs to cover all of it. It's really time Eskom got serious and cut back on their own wastages, etc so that consumers don't have to bear the brunt of all of this.

I as a South African citizen have to pay for every single one of the ANC's fark-ups and Kieswetter, that masepoes, just wants more like ole Barend Du Plessis did back in the day. We really need a new struggle, with struggle songs...
fcking Communists!

This is why Eskom needs that 36.1% increase from paying customers and 43.55% increase from paying metros.

Its very short range as far as cabled solutons go. a few hundred meters at most. So you will need to install it at every substation at every street with some LTE uplink. We are talking deploying and maintaining millions of monitoring devices.

It will be much cheaper and more effective for meters to be moved to substations and for pre-paid to become an online, SMS or/and app based system.

Fraudulent sales of prepaid electricity tokens and electricity theft reached 13.9 TWh in FY23/24 which is MORE than the 13.2 TWh lost in loadshedding.

Income from 13.9 TWh of electricity stolen: 0
Total loadshedding for 2023/24 financial year: 13.2 TWh
If there was no electricity theft—by Eskom employees—there would not have been loadshedding!

If there was no electricity theft there wouldn't have been loadshedding!
This story needs to be investigated further. Why is Eskom demanding more increases when they cannot control inventory?

Also note how Eskom releases their delayed financial reports and this news of massive fraud within its ranks on Thursday 19 December 2024, just when the most industries close for year.

Technology can't fix poor morals. If people think it's OK to steal, no tech will prevent them from doing so.
Time to roll out KRN 3 and then 4 etc... SA is f-cked.
