Worst-case scenario for Eskom blackouts this winter

Eskom's National Control Manager, Gavin Hurford, indicated that South Africa could see up to 100 days of rotational power cuts over the winter period in the worst-case scenario.

During an Eskom Media briefing held on Tuesday, 12 April 2022, Hurford pointed out that it is difficult to make such predictions.

So long as the sun shines! Even the tiniest solar system should be a must for anyone!

I just added a 1.5kw 12 system to my office which is not connected to the house and it cost less that R9900, it would have been R6900 if I wasn't so lazy and installed it myself.

Us poor suckers living in complexes can only read and weep.
Would have solar paneled the snot out of everything by now if I could.

Lobby your complex to come up with a solution.

Have a buddy in a complex where they came up with a very reasonable solution. The complex would convert all carports to solar panel roofs.

The complex will charge R1.20 per unit or something for electricity going forward. This is to cover the initial capex, and then add to reserve funds once paid off. Obviously factoring in Eskom charges etc as well.

Each unit can then install inverters and batteries inside as a load shedding backup. So residents basically get discounted electricity, with backup power coming at their own expense...

I read the title and thought "Great! Another doomsday article from Ted Blom or Chris Yelland." but it's coming from an Eskom manager which is troubling.
If Eskom are finally admitting that crap lies ahead then we are in for a fun time. :(

Pity there isn't a way to blanket the roof with panels and supply connections to tenants...

I'm sure Eskom will find some dodgy law to say a Body Corporate can't do this at that scale... wait for it.
Good idea tho.

considering many complexes throw their toys out the cot for Fibre connections to their units,
and how difficult it is to get them to approve something like DSTV dishes,

solar panels? forgetaboutit.

Only 100 days? I thought the worst case was a complete black out that was being punted a few months ago when stage 8 was almost a thing.

Considering that winter is only 3 months or 90 odd days, a 100 days is actually like complete black out plus some extra stuffed in there
