ESRI on Mac

The more research I do the more questions I have.

I know ESRI runs on Solaris ( SUN )

Anything on MAC ???

Anything equivalent in the GIS / Mapping World ???

Can one run XP / Windows 7 natively on the Mac ( Mini ) ???

I know a bit about "Boot Camp" but have obviously not used it.

If you know about Boot Camp you know that it's sole purpose is to run windows natively.

Yes on the XP and Windows 7 - bootcamp is what allows alternate OS installs natively on a mac. the other option is VMware or parallels which uses virtualisation

Boot Loader

If you know about Boot Camp you know that it's sole purpose is to run windows natively.

OK -- so you have two partitions on your HDD -- and a sort of boot loader so you choose at boot time which OS you want.

If you choose Windows then that OS boots and runs natively on the Mac hardware ????

Do you need to have Mac OS installed ?

ie
Could you just install Wndows 7 straight off ???? ( heaven forbid -- turn the Mac into a PC )

Use a Linux boot loader and do the same thing ???

I'm not sure about using a linux boot loader but yes to everything else with the exception of having to have osx installed.

Sorry if i am not hearing properly .........

Are you saying that you can take the latest Mac Mini put a Windows 7 install DVD in the slot and it will load and all the software / hardware will work

Perhaps now I need TWO Mac Mini's

Yes but you'll need the Mac mini system DVD's to install the windows drivers afterwards.

Have a look here. Unfortunately is a thinly disguised attempt at suggesting that ESRI has no OS X based competition, which is just not the case.

There is GRASS, uDIG, QGIS, Cartographica, Minerva, and a bunch of others if you bother to search for them.
