Ethernet HS[D&|U]PA modem...

Lately my [own] ADSL line has turned into a temperamental yoyo, and I need a mostly-fixed wireless backup connection, I know there is a HSDPA USB modem available, but I need it to work with my Linux router box and I don't want to have to struggle with USB drivers, also there is a limit of 5m on USB cable [without one or more boosters] and I will need to move the modem about to get the best signal strength & signal quality...

Are there any ethernet HSDPA and/or HSUPA modems available or soon to be available?

IC the only one i can think of is the 3G router but then you need the router and a datacard.

I don't want to use the WRT543G router bcos I already have a Linux router box [actually it's a bit more than that, it's a Linux box running VMware virtual machines, and I want to add another virtual machine to control an ethernet HSDPA modem]...

An Ethernet to Serial converter would have worked IF the modem had a serial port, I often use them if I have to access a 232 port over a long distance.

You'll obviously need an Ethernet to USB adaptor, but I'm pretty sure they must be out there.

I often buy stuff like this from CME (www.cme.co.za), RJ (www.rjprotech.co.za) or Eagle in the Cape (www.eagle.co.za)

I should've thought about that - I know that there is such a USB<-->Ethernet converter cable for IPWireless modems, but AFAIK it is quite a short cable.

Would such a converter definitely overcome the 5m USB cable length limitation - assuming that the actual cable used is ethernet [with its twisted pairs]?

You run the Ethernet to where you want the modem (100m limit for cat5, but you can use bridges / switches to extend) and then a short USB cable to the modem from the adaptor, can be 10cm....

On your system, you map a virtual com port to the IP of the remote modem and it appears local.

So you don't extend the USB cable using cat5, you actually tunnel the serial data inside IP. Your modem can now be anywhere in the world (or your house!)

 but surely that means I would still need USB drivers for the Huawei E220 HSDPA USB modem?

Which has now been fixed :)

The catch with vmware and usb is that the *active* machine will grab the usb device and keep it :) so on boot up, just insert the usb device :)

laterz !

The thing is that I don't have a monitor or kbd or mouse attached - currently completely unattended, apart from when I ssh into the box, which is hardly ever, the USB grabbing thing with VMware is something I would prefer to avoid by using a purely ethernet device...:)

BTW, does the Windoze Huawei dashboard s/w work with the E220, and can one make & receive cellular calls as with the E620 data card?

I've recently wanted to get an E620 running on Vista, and since VMC 7 refused to install on Vista , I went to Huawei's site for a solution ... http://www.huawei.com/mobileweb/en/doc/list.do?type=-1&id=305

Logically I chose the latest non network specific one ... (normal) dated 18-Sep-2006. However I did notice some older ones that support voice calls ... 30-Jun-2006. Has anyone tried to use an E620 as a normal cellphone?

BTW the driver works great on Vista, although the interface is dog ugly. Fortuantely you only have to go in once to configure, after that you can use Vista's amalgamated connect/disconnect functions (as used by dial, wifi etc.)

The E220 comes with the dash loaded on the modem's internal flash. You just stick it in your PC, stand back and Voila! Pretty cool actually.

Actually, no...

There is no connector on the E220. Nor can the dash use the PC mic and speaker.
LOL, Ok just as well I asked - in my quest to not assume anything - not that I was planning on running Windoze to use the Huawei E220 dash :).

You could always run a XP partition under vmware....

True, but without cellular call abilities there's no reason to use heXPee, especially considering that the E220 should be ok using Tazz_Tux's modprobe in Linux [just a minor USB hassle with VMware] :).

Just pulling your leg, would never dream of seeing XP on your system. ;)

LOL, strangely enough, I'm using heXPee ATM - finally got around to updating JasJar firmware which requires M$ ActiveSynch, completed successfully and installed latest version of Skype for Pocket PC...Windoze has its uses :).

//dreaming of a day when I will have Linux running on this JasJar :D.
