Hey all

Has anybody had any success getting ethernet to work over old wiring?

I have 2 pairs of >20 year intercom cabling (about 50 meters) that I want to run ethernet on. Unfortunately there is no way to run any new cables without digging up tar.

And while I'm at it I'm hoping to push ethernet through my old telkom internal wiring.

Should be fun trying!

Check the links might be useful.

Ethernet kinda relies on the twists in twisted-pair to minimise crosstalk and avoid interference. At a length of 50m running outdoors, you're more likely to be building a FM antenna than a LAN solution. But I'll be the first to eat my words and offer up a beer if this works.

I don't know if they exist or work, though a google search returned some results; try look for a POTS to Ethernet converter. Or use the existing cables to carry power and as @gamer16 mentioned, look at wireless (60 GHz solutions are really great at carrying up to 1 Gbps over +- 200m).

It'll work just fine.

you may get slight packet loss but nothing to write home about.

I've had much longer ethernet runs over odd cable.

people underestimate the reliability of ethernet.

How many cores are in those cables? I'm guessing 2 in each, which gives you a total of 4. You might be able to get something to connect at 10mbps. I'll be very surprised (and suitably impressed) if you get anything more than that.

100baseTX should work fine over 4 wires (2 x pairs) twisted or not.

with RJ45 connectors you use:
  • Pin 1: Transmit Data+
  • Pin 2: Transmit Data-
  • Pin 3: Receive Data+
  • Pin 4: Unused
  • Pin 5: Unused
  • Pin 6: Receive Data-
  • Pin 7: Unused
  • Pin 8: Unused

100BaseT4 (Fast Ethernet) uses 4 pairs.
  • Pin 1: Transmit Data 1+
  • Pin 2: Transmit Data 1-
  • Pin 3: Receive Data 2+
  • Pin 4: Bidirectional Data 3+
  • Pin 5: Bidirectional Data 3-
  • Pin 6: Receive Data 2-
  • Pin 7: Bidirectional Data 4+
  • Pin 8: Bidirectional Data 4-

Definitely doable. I've successfully run ethernet over barbed wire, it's a fairly hardy technology. That was using industrial-grade equipment but I'm sure there's a lot of commercial grade stuff available. Short answer - definitely possible.

I used this - Westermo DDW-142 Wolverine - Managed Switch

Use the old intercom cable as a draw wire to pull ethernet cable through? Surely the old cable must be in a conduit of some kind?

I would try this as well. Otherwise just crimp the wires with the suggested layout and see what happens.
