With pandemonium breaking out at a council meeting on Wednesday, mayor Eugene Johnson was removed from the top post.

Her deputy, Buyelwa Mafaya, and council chief whip Wandisile Jikeka are due to face similar motions at the meeting.

The DA (48), Northern Alliance (3), FF+ (2), ACDP (2), DOP (2), AIC (1), AIM (1), PAC (1), UDM (1) and GOOD (1) voted in favour of the motion.

It was rejected by the ANC (48), EFF (8) and PA (2).

The motion was read out by ACDP councillor Lance Grootboom, but he was repeatedly interrupted and had to plead for a microphone to be heard at the Feather Market Centre.

“The mayor has failed to do oversight on service delivery. For three months, the Bay has not been cleaned,” Grootboom said.

“She has no plan other than playing golf and attending events.”

Nelson Mandela Bay mayor, deputy mayor and chief whip ousted via motion of no confidence

The mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, Eugene Johnson, her deputy, Buyelwa Mafaya, and the chief whip, Wandile Jikeka, were on Wednesday removed from their positions via a motion of no confidence.

The meeting was called through a motion of exigency by the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), and seconded by the Freedom Front Plus (FF+).

Sixty-two councillors voted to remove the trio, with 58 against.

This was the third attempt to remove Johnson, who was elected mayor by a one-vote margin over the DA's Eastern Cape leader, Nqaba Bhanga.

Did they successfully manage to elect a mayor after the foiled ballot box heist?

I think it's time that Wakandan principles of a fight to the death for leadership be implemented. At least it will provide some entertainment for the bored unemployed
The worthless politicians would probably use proxies in the fights.

Retief Odendaal elected as Nelson Mandela Bay mayor

Ten hours after Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Eugene Johnson was booted out of office, she was replaced with DA councillor Retief Odendaal early on Thursday morning.

Odendaal went up against ANC councillor and council chief whip Wandisile Jikeka to replace Johnson, with the matter put to vote by a secret ballot.

...
Deputy mayor Buyelwa Mafaya was also removed along with Jikeka as council chief whip.

They were both removed with 61 votes in favour of the motion of no confidence, with 58 against it.

Mafaya was replaced by AIM councillor Khusta Jack who was the only councillor nominated for the post.

FF+ councillor Bill Harington took up the council chief whip position, with no other nominations made against him as well.

It isn't just the ANC losing seats. Those seats need to go to parties that are properly run, and not to parties who only exist to give their leader a nice cushy government job.

Hopefully the DA's coalition partners have made sure that there will be political hell to pay if they don't stick to the agreement.

RW Johnson made a very good point that the DA needs to form a popular front that explicitly sets the bare minimum what voters can expect from a party that joins it in a coalition.

Why would the other parties listen to a DA set standard? The parties with more seats are hoping to win more as do the DA so it ends being a case of them trying to show each other up like is happening in Joburg.
