Goodbye Lightning port

The European Union's (EU) recently-passed legislation stipulating that all devices sold in Europe must feature a USB-C port will come into effect in late 2024.

According to Softpedia News, the new legislation has now been set in stone, having been published in the Official Journal of the European Union.

Only if wired.

Does this apply to laptops too?

They will see their a$$es cause now they competing with every other usb type C cable manufacturer and their dog....

This my be an unpopular opinion but I am not in favor of governments dictating design/tech choices to private companies.

IMO if you don't like the port, don't buy the phone. I get that this is about e-waste. I am just worried that moves like these could stifle innovation in the long run.

That, or they'll limit the charge to 1A on any unofficial cable.

The Lightning cable is long overdue a well-deserved death.

I wonder if Apple would get in trouble if they went portless though, instead opting to use a proprietary MagSafe data connection...

Not as easy when you're in a walled garden.

So this seems to be a rumour - but only 15w wireless ?

I honestly think it'll be too slow, unless that Apple started accelerating R&D on wireless charging a few years ago. Or, they'll put a spin on it that any faster will damage the battery or some other marketing nonsense.

I think they're going to go port-less and I think it's going to be a dumb decision. Resisting the change to USB-C doesn't make any sense. Either way they're going to lose revenue from lightning.

Is that because of file transfer speed as opposed to charging speed? Could they not adopt a faster WiFi system then?

Still waiting to see an Apple customer complaining about this move.

Wait until you hear what they've been dictating to car manufacturers.

Up to a certain wattage, will probably follow USB PD spec.

It's an open standard, it can (and will) change over time. The stiffling innovation stuff is nonsense, it's basically the same argument everyone had with plugs a century ago except USB c is easier to iterate/improve.

Apple is just unhappy as they were coining it with the royalties they got on their cable parents.
