The government could fund a new basic income grant for South Africa by borrowing money, but ultimately it will be taxpayers who pay for the new scheme, says Wits University professor Michael Sachs.

Really now, is there an instance where the tax payers don't "ultimately" pay? That line is ridiculous.

government has no money, it can only finance itself through debt and taxes

Instead of income tax/VAT, If govt can implement Bank Transaction Tax of 1% or instead sale of any items from shops are taxed at 1%, govt will collect a lot from everyone. Those who not paying will pay also

Yes. Extra tax on food and liquor - call it the BITS, Basic income-grant tax subsidy. People will froth at the mouth then.

or better yet, restrict government's intervention in markets and allow private individuals to solve problems through normal free market mechanisms

governments do not solve problems, they create problems

They cannot even generate sufficient taxes to maintain the budget of 2 years ago. Not sure they themselves know where the additional taxes will come from. Another bloody abortion about to happen in the ANC....

How are they in power since 1994? Who is voting for them then?

that has nothing to do with the issue of majority, you just have to look at the absolute numbers to see that the majority of people in this country do not vote for the ANC

infact... the majority of people in this country do not even vote
