PRETORIA - Eyewitness News has learnt police watchdog Ipid has secured a search warrant to inspect acting National Police Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane's house in the north of Pretoria.

The investigation relates to allegations of corruption during the period that Phahlane was head of forensic services.

Ipid also obtained a warning statement from the lieutenant general this morning, linked to a case of defeating the ends of justice.

Acting National Police Commissioner Phahlane has been under investigation, and is accused of defeating the ends of justice, after allegedly contacting witnesses who formed part of an Ipid probe about his R8 million mansion at an upmarket estate in Pretoria.

Investigators tracked a paper trail which shows that Phahlane took kickbacks to secure tenders.

It’s alleged that a supplier of chemicals used in forensic work transferred funds to a sound system supplier.

That supplier then installed the home entertainment system in Phahlane’s house and the chemicals company was later rewarded with a tender.

Phahlane: Ipid probe an assault on my integrity

PRETORIA – Acting National Police Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane has described the manner in which the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) is investigating him as an assault on his character and integrity.

Ipid investigators conducted a search of the lieutenant general’s luxury house in the Pretoria north as part of a corruption investigation.

Phahlane is accused of taking kickbacks to secure tenders for a company during his tenure as head of the police’s forensics division.

Its alleged that a company installed an R80,000 sound system in Phahlane’s house in return for tenders.

In a statement, Phahlane is said to be disgusted and disappointed with the level of disrespect and discourtesy shown by everyone involved in the search of his property, including the media.

Phahlane confirmed meeting with Ipid investigators on Thursday and says he will continue to cooperate with them.

Phahlane dismisses claims of conflict of interest in sound system debacle

JOHANNESBURG – Acting National Police Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane has dismissed suggestions that doing business in his personal capacity with a police service provider is conflict of interest.

Phahlane was speaking to 702’s Xolani Gwala on Friday morning following the search of his Pretoria residence on Thursday by police and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

Investigators were searching for an R80,000 sound system installed by a police service provider allegedly as a kickback for tenders.

Phahlane has denied the allegations of corruption saying he paid for the equipment himself.

The lieutenant general Phahlane confirmed that he contracted the owner of a police service provider to provide an interior decorating service at his house.

“Yes but there is nothing wrong. All of us will buy from Makro, does it mean that if the police are buying from Makro, they are not supposed to?”

FIRST ON EWN: Ipid widens probe into Phahlane, hones in on top cop's luxury cars

PRETORIA - Eyewitness News can reveal that the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) has expanded its investigation into Acting National Police Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane.

Ipid is now trying to establish how he bought and financed at least six cars over the last three years.

It has also emerged that the top cop will on Wednesday serve papers on several parties to stop the investigation into his conduct.

Just a week ago, Ipid investigators searched Phahlane’s house and seized an R80,000 home theatre system as part of a corruption investigation.

A Land Rover Discovery, Range Rover Sport, VW Amarok and Toyota Hilux are among the cars registered to the acting national police commissioner, and Ipid wants to know how he paid for them.

Phahlane's entire career should be scrutinised - DA

Cape Town – The DA has called for acting police commissioner Lieutenant General Khomotso Phahlane’s whole career to be investigated.

The party on Thursday said it had submitted a report, compiled in 2013, to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, detailing corruption in the forensic services, which at that time was headed up Phahlane.

The report was compiled by CPN Forensic and Accounting Services after concerns were raised about unlawful practices taking place at the forensic division of the police.

DA MP Zakhele Mbhele said the report, which included allegations of procurement irregularities, irregular appointments and a questionable birthday party disguised as a workshop, should form part of the ongoing investigation into Phahlane and his lifestyle.

"This regrettably places another cloud of suspicion over the office of the National Police Commissioner. Instead of focusing on fighting crime, and keeping our communities safe, SAPS leadership are embroiled in allegations and investigations," Mbhele said.

The party also wanted the report discussed in Parliament.

This is the same report that Phahlane addressed in December 2016, when he officially released its findings.

This, he said at the time, was because the report was constantly rehashed "by certain individuals for their own purposes".

Most of the allegations levelled against him and his department could not be verified, according to the report, some due to lack of information.

Phahlane has been under the spotlight following a raid at his luxurious house.

This week, it emerged that the police watchdog's investigation would be expanding into his and his wife's R4.3m fleet of luxury cars.

Mbhele on Thursday said the DA was more determined than ever to end the rot in the SAPS and ensure the police were led by the best possible team.

In order for that to happen, they said, the CPN report had to be dealt with.
