Expect power cuts tonight (12 June 2014): Eskom

"... not leaving office equipment such as photocopiers and computers in standby mode after hours."

Seriously? The largest consumers of power in most commercial buildings are lighting (admittedly they mentioned non-essential lighting) and air conditioning and it's just mind-boggling how much is left on unnecessarily after hours. Especially air-con. Appliances left in standby mode drawing 3W-5W will never make a dent in the load when compared to air-cons pulling well over 1000W or most fluorescent lighting units (3 tubes x 36W = 108W - look how many of these are left on in most buildings).

There needs to be a lot more financial incentive for changing power consumption habits - and I don't mean simply increasing the price unless there's also a move to decrease pricing for non-critical periods as is done in some other countries. I'm sure many domestic consumers would happily run their washing machines, dishwashers and tumble-dryers late at night if it meant a sizable reduction in power cost.

Opening Ceremony and first game of Soccer World Cup and what does Eskom do?

Give us the finger!

Eskom guy on the radio said after 8 pm there won't be shedding, it's the 6-8 peak that's the problem.

Jip, no incentive to not run it at the times that suite yourself best, if your wallet does not argue for a different time.

Boksburg went down about twenty minutes ago.

Always with the "maintenance". Why don't you fix your ****.

Make electricity cheaper in off-peak times and people will switch over naturally.

Yep, my sister in the UK has her washing machine and tumble drier on a timer. I can't remember the times but it's like cheaper between 12 and 6am or something similar.

Our suburb in Pta east it seems, is down. H'ray. Guess it's KFC for dinner, then.

Why don't pizzerias use this to their advantage and advertise their wood-fired, electricity-free specials when this happens? Saving the grid, one slice at a time.
