Hi All,

I've noticed that some manufacturers provide an OEM-backed extension to the warranty, maintenance plan, or service plan. I've seen it with BMW, Audi, VW, and even Toyota.

However, with other manufacturers that don't provide this option, there are several insurance-type companies that do provide this. Have you tried any of these and are some better than others? The car is still within the OEM warranty and service plan so the extension should commence when the OEM cover expires.

The third party ones tend to cover selected items only and if an item not covered causes a major failure in the engine they won't cover it. Read the fine print and google the companies and their policies. You'll find some scary things.

A factory or manufacturers warranty and maintenance plan however will cover everything. I should know. My BMW set the dealer back R120k under the extended plan.

+1

Third party may be cheaper but they have many exclusions and for parts they do cover, there is a capped payment amount usually.

I've gone third party before and had to fork out more to cover the difference between their payment and replacement cost when things broke than it would have cost to go with an OEM extension that covers 100%

Yup oem extension is definitely first choice. However it seems some oems don’t offer extension which means you forced to go the third party route

VW extentions are amazing. Audi's cost double (for effectively the same car, experienced this with a polo and A1).
and their extentions usually includes a very expensive 100 000kms major service

I had one through MFC - I think it was a hollard product or something. When I had the heated grip on my motorcycle fail they denied my claim by saying it's part of the brake system and brakes aren't covered, so I had to draw pictures and all sorts of fun stuff. Eventually got it covered, but it was still a pain in the ballsack.
