We're looking at buying a Yaris sedan next week and have been offered an extended warranty (from AutoPedigree) for R4900.

I don't know the terms yet but are they generally a good plan or not?

I don't think so. Unless the mileage is over 100000km or you're buying from an auction, I don't think it's worth it.

In terms of the Yaris, it's quite a reliable car and the cost of fixing it if anything does happen is not exorbitant. So I'd opt against it.

look carefully at the warranty. It might be good, but I have heard some crazy things about extended warranty's. Like they cover the clutch if it goes, but if the gearbox is damaged because of it, you pay for the gearbox.

Generally its a good idea. Even a simple repair would cost that much. Just make sure its not a bum warranty

Thanks :) will have to see exactly what the terms are.

I've never dealt with auto pedigree before.

ill never touch a car without a warranty. its madness! you drive it fine and then something like the aircon packs up, happened to me once. R7000 later I decided never again would I buy a car without a warranty or service plan. never!

And I can tell you now, in all the years i've had cars the amount of times a warranty paid for something by far, far exceeded any savings I would have had by not taking a warranty.

It should actually not be legal for a dealer to sell u car without warranty IMHO but anyway.

Just make sure its a good proper one.

You are covered by a common law warranty for a short period, like about one or two months - not sure on the detail.

I don't believe the third party warranties are worth it.

Seems a bit steep. What are the terms (Months/Milage)?

I read somewhere that extended warranties don't always cover everything because they are warranties, not guarantees. do they not offer a extended service contract instead? If you do opt for it, read the entire thing before signing, make the person explain terms or clauses you don't understand. Generally Toyota parts are relatively cheap and their cars are good value and solid, so it may not be worth having an extended warranty. but up to you, if it covers comprehensively, go for it. Also check at a dealership if they offer an extended warranty...

they are a waste, i mean its based on statistics, so technically you should be sorted..
saying that i have an extended warranty, I know all this, but prefer to cover for what might happen...
