Hello

Is it possible to extend my wifi so that my brother who lives 2 houses (probably about 50m) down could connect? I am a complete n00b at this, and have tried to read up on APs, extenders, etc, but fear I may be overcomplicating things. Would appreciate some assistance from someone who has done this befor.

Thanks

Can you see your brothers house from your roof? Any obstructions in the way? Other house/foliage/walls/etc?

Done this across open space (park)
The receiving pc had wireless card and signal was about 25%
Got one of those larger high gain antenna - think 40db - for R250
The antenna screws into the wireless card - signal jumped to about 80%

So there is no chance of line of sight... ie: if you and your brother were to climb on the roof at each place is there no way you could see each other? House in between completely blocking any view?

If you have line of sight... stick a 3m aluminium pole up... get two of these: http://www.dbg.co.za/product_info.php?products_id=669 and mount them pointed at each other, turn the output power down as low as you can while
maintaining a decent signal/link, configure as bridge and you should be set.

Pointless putting a super powerful transmitter up your side and nothing his side.. he might see your network but communicating back will be a problem.

Hi There,
I like Mal1ce soloution. But you may need to consider putting some earthing in as the pole may act as a lightning conductor. It may pay you to get on the roof at the chimney and check for line of sight then you can skip having the poles
25m is pushing it for most in house equipment.
Keep the signal down as low as possible to prevent too many people in the area having a go at hacking in. I would also make the SSID not visible for that reason and make the password VERY complex and long.

Regards

Tim

Hi OP

I'd like to do something similar. What did you end up doing? How much did it cost? How is it working?
