Hey folks

THis might sound a bit silly , and hopefully its not a repeat topic.

Are there external antennas available with a lot longer cords? or ... can the cord on the antenna be safely extended by for eg. me ...

the reason : i have no 3g signal inside my hous ... 0 ... nadda ... but 5 paces out of my house i have 3-4 bars , and the same goes for on the roof. (yes ... i climbed it with a laptop to check).
I now want to mount an antenna on the roof so i can get signal inside my PC room.

any ideas .. tips ... cluess??? :p

there must be something ppl ... i dont want to sit on the lawn in the middle of the night to be on the web ...

Uuhm, why not? Light yourself a nice 'Bosveld fire' and pretend you are far far away. :D

Sorry bud, but I can't help you.

Hi Newb-lite

I am sure either the Vodacom3g or MTNBroadband dude would be able to help you. There should be an extension cable available.
PM those guys.

I'm actually trying to source an extension cable as we speak!

At the frequencies the 3G signal operates, one cannot just extend the cable. The whole system must be matched.

There are local high-gain antennas available but the connector for the data card is the problem.

Which data card do you have?

@Newb-lite, AFAIK the longer the cable the more loss experienced, which defeats the purpose of using an external antenna [the reason antenna cables are short], so my advice is to definitely let v3g help find you a solution :).

Maybe you could post some of the cellids in your area - maybe one or more of them is scheduled to be 3G'd soon...

Because of the hassles I have where I live, V3G has put me in contact with their local people and they offered to install an outdoor antenna. At no charge nogal! They were just waiting for the PC Card antenna connector. I had a voice mail yesterday from someone there but haven't had a chance to call back because of deadlines, but I will soon ...

We're all on the same quest; connectors for the data cards....

Biometrics, as soon as we can get the connectors, the guys will get you sorted.

The cable length is a definite factor, but coupled with a high-gain antenna can work.

Thanx for all the words of encouragement chaps ... hehehe ...

i have the Novatel merlin i think ... the one with only one light on it.

Please let me know if you find an extension V3G ... and Biometrics ... lemme know if that mission of yours works out as well.

Until then ... ill get a little tent/pc room ... eish ... :o

On your ordinary cellphone [assuming your voice contract is with Vodacom] it should [or you can tell it to] display the cell tower name of the tower that your cellphone is currently yapping with...if you could post a few of those from your area, there is a chance that maybe one of the fake palm trees will soon be decorated with 3G :D [which might give you more comprehensive 3G coverage].

aaah thanx ... never done that ...

will it show up on a non 3g phone as well?
my 3g enabled card hasnt left my datacard as yet.
