Hi all,

I am in process of buying a second hand car and dealer is offering me with below extras. Given I am new to this country, I would like to get your opinion on if its worth it:

  1. Car Tracker ‘Quick Silver’ is a feature-rich pre-emptive vehicle security product that allows you to personally track your vehicle online via your computer, tablet or smartphone. Once-off cost of the tracking unit is R2,850 and the monthly subscription fee is only R185.90. Kindly note that this includes R150,000 Limited Recovery Warranty, in the event that they are unable to locate the vehicle.
I will get the insurance on the car, will any theft not be covered by insurance?

  1. Smash and grab: R2,950 with the option of 50 %( lighter) or 35 %( darker) film. The film has a lifetime guarantee not to fade. High quality film used
I called few other dealers....prices for S&G with 35% film varies a lot...From two dealers I had quotation of 1800-2000 ZAR for 150mm film while on quoted ZAR 3000+, any insights how much it will cost for a Discovery 4 model

  1. Dent & Scratch Policy: Car Care Voucher offers you a unique maintenance plan that will assist you in keeping your vehicle in show room condition. Stone chips, scratches, paintless dent removal, windscreen chips and cracks and tar removal can be requested once a month. The cost of a 18 months plan is R4,250 or you can opt for a 24 months plan for R5,300.
Worth it?

Finally, they want to sell a Motorite Warranty for mechanical breakdown for apporx. 9K ZAR...includes things like engine 35K, transmission 25K, etc etc.......Looks like its worth it but not sure practically speaking if its any useful..

P.S. I want to get my car serviced via the Landrover dealership...

Would be great if you can share your views based on your experience.

Thanks

If you have insurance then the tracker for recovery isn't really worth it and those things are easy to defeat by our local criminals. But they do give some limited peace of mind in the event you or a loved one are taken with the car. Limited as they usually take you to buy time to find and remove the tracker.

The dent crap isn't worth it. They cover so little you'd never have occasion to use it.

Sometimes the insurance premiums are based on the tracker.

None of them are wroth it. pass.
They probably shafted you with registration and on road fees too.
Yes they did....lol....but they did mention this while negotiating for the price...

So not even Motorite Warranty for mechanical breakdown?

In regards to insurance, ....any recommendations for insurance companies and I can check with them on insurance with and without tracker.

Finally, I do what smash and grab and I got quoted with 1,800 ZAR for 150mm (35% tint) ....is it too cheap for a quality job?

a sucker is born every min, in this case you IF you ever buy such nonsense.
tacker/netstar for tacking, also insurance pays,
Insurance, check Naked out, PM/DM me, for my referral code,

dent and scratch protection, can find this at the bank itself, and usually for cheaper, even if you just buy it someplace else, its usually cheaper.

Car dealers are like a pack of hyenas, will try to circle you to get their commissions

I had a motorite warranty on my car, used it twice. Very "cheap" fixes, so dont expect a replacement engine or gearbox.

As for the rest, Id look at the tinting.... but id go light. it saves the interior a bit and might help if you get a smash and grab.

I dont have tracker in my car, if they steal it, i dont want it back

When it comes to smash and grab, normally car dealers add on their markup as well. I would get quotes from actual installers. You might also find that some installers come to you, whether at work or at home.
With regards to insurance, yes look at insurance companies like Outsurance and Naked but also consider Insurance brokers. Due to the amount of policies they have on their books they get huge discounts from insurance companies. I am through a broker and got much better quotes than through Outsurance or Naked and I don't pay any excess.

Yap, even the extended warranty will be a headache the day you try to claim, they will
Find every excuse in the book not to pay, everytime something goes wrong they will say it’s not covered.

Tracker is only “useful” if you get kidnapped. Kinda. Most times they jam it successfully either way.
Also do you really want a stolen car back?

CAnt help with insurance and tint.

Politely reject the scratch and dent cover, it's useless. I would also ask for a detailed explanation of what is covered in the warranty and the exclusions, post it here and get opinions.

Car tracker - get it only of it's a requirement on your insurance, that too from a reputed company like netstar. Otherwise no need, insurance will pay regardless of it.

Smash and grab- check if the second hand car already has it. When I bought my car, dealer was pushing for it even though there was one already on the car.

Extended warranty- I dint get it, but if u do a lot of kilometers get it, but make sure u read the terms and conditions.

Scratch and dent - if u have OCD then get it. Otherwise get it done urself instead of getting a plan.

Which dealership is this? Hopefully it’s not Monte Carlo Auto in Hurlingham.

Those warranties with their limits....
R35K for the engine
BMW quoted me R100K to replace the turbo(s?). I don't want to know what they would quote for an engine replacement. R35K would be a drop in the bucket, and I doubt LR would be any cheaper.
