Just tell them you did some investigation about the car and you are not comfortable to take the risk.
Anything that breaks will be expensive. Just remember one thing when buying a secondhand car. It is not the price you pay for it but what it cost when it was new.

You might pay R200k but when something breaks it is still a R1.1mil car part that breaks and the costs would be the same. 70% of engine repairs on that discovery will be a body off situation and that is 10h labour.

Do you have in writing what it was for? If so, does it say anything about it being non-refundable. If not, then demand it back as you were under the impression it was refundable. It's likely going to turn into a fight but it's a R10k fight so worth it in my books. If you have to send them a letter of demand then do so, hopefully you won't need to take it to small claims.

+1 for fortuner, and now dont listen to anyone when they say it's one of the most stolen vehicles because the quantum uses the same engine. Ur insurance will cover for the theft if any happens.

 Insurance isn't going to help you if you come out of the shop and find your 4tuner gone.. I' ve driven one for 3years and and couldn't trade it in quickly enough. Out of all the cars stolen at my nearby school, 4tuners were right up there. Bloody hard ride as well , since it has the Hilux chassis.

it’s 2013 discovery 4 diesel…206DT-v6 3.0 with 190k kn on the clock….
They are fantastic cars and issue with bearing was resolved, important is that services were done on schedule with good oil.
Most important is that your cooling system is 100% and there are few preventative measures.
There is wealth of information on various forums and parts are not an issue, you can even source second hand ones.
Take some sort of third party insurance and negotiate hard, they might come back with some nice discount.
If there is LR specialist around take it to them and ask them to do full check. (I paid R1000 for that just for peace of mind)

I had D3 and still have 110 td5.

BTW most of them have window tint fitted by default.

And as pointed out it is expensive car so rule should be if you can not afford it new you should not buy it second hand. Still you can do it with a bit of homework and prepare yourself for possible issues.

The deposit was upfront to put the car on hold for me….

I highly doubt I will get it back but will try…

I am fine to lose it than to get a car where I have to spend way more fixing in case things go wrong..

will stick to Toyota fortuner …

It has LR franchise service history and major service was done in September of 2019….

What third party insurance…. Will it cover the engine issues? Any recommendations? Thanks

LR might offer something, apparently Hollard is good, again it depends on plan and how much you want to spend.
Yes depends on a plan they will have limits on how much can be spent for specific items.
Still ask them to do full once over.
Check tyres, you are looking at R20k for a set.

Bargain hard since when you decide to sell you will not get a lot (same with volvo, toyota has advantage there) so there might be a bargain somewhere for you.

BTW if it is deposit then they must return it regardless.
Only if it is worded non refundable reservation or something like that they might have leg to stand.

Don’t let anybody tell you the crank issue was ever resolved because it hasn’t been.

What is your max budget? Maybe you could fit a Prado.

This looks looks alright!! I do want to install a reverse camera and sensor…

But it’s 4.0….. not the 3.0 that ppl raving about …..

Another challenge, it’s far from where I am in Joburg….would you buy a car without looking at it if Dekra confirms no issues?

It does look very clean and its below 200k kilometers, the engine hasn't even been broken in yet, It will even be cheaper than the diesel equivalent because the petrol versions are not too in demand.

I would suggest you actually take a look at the car, If you are investing R300k whats another R500 to drive down to see it before you commit?

I would also suggest test driving the vehicle because the 4.0 v6 with the auto gearbox could be frustrating to drive, no torque low down and the gearbox will be shifting up and down even on the slightest hill. Another thing to consider is fuel consumption. But you can offset that with the vehicle cost price.

Another is this…

If I can negotiate 320k on road…. I am happy to pay that amount considering car in goood condition….

This is 3.0…….why is 3.0 preferred to 4.0?

So my requirements are that it drives nice, in city and also on long routes…

Easy to maintain…

Hope to maintain good sell price in 12-18 months…
