As for the rest, Id look at the tinting.... but id go light. it saves the interior a bit and might help if you get a smash and grab.
Fully agreed with the rest of your comments, but the tinting level should be inversely proportional to the skin colour of the driver. Caucasian skins virtually glow in the dark, so a darker tint needed.

Another is this…

If I can negotiate 320k on road…. I am happy to pay that amount considering car in goood condition….

This is 3.0…….why is 3.0 preferred to 4.0?

So my requirements are that it drives nice, in city and also on long routes…

Easy to maintain…

Hope to maintain good sell price in 12-18 months…
The diesel is preferred because of its low end torque, more fuel efficient and people in general just prefer diesel in SUVS, some people tow and diesel is much better at towing. etc. many other reasons. The petrol is still bullet proof though.

In city either will be great, on long routes the petrol might frustrate you with its gear hunting.

Its a toyota, you will sell it for the same price if not more in 12 months.

Car dealers are like a pack of hyenas, will try to circle you to get their commissions
They know very well that "extras" only put a few rands difference to the monthly payment, so they tend to push for them (and load the purchase price as much as possibe). If purchasers only did some sums, they realise that R250 over 72 months becomes a cringeworthy amount when amortised, together with the interest that they are paying.

Do NOT take those "extras". They're designed to shaft you out of more money.
Just take get separate insurance quote where you'll get all of the above plus comprehensive cover included for much less.

Thank you everyone…..will hunt a nice Fortuner …..

I am feeling a bit u comfortable thought telling the agency that I am no longer interested given we been working on the deal for a month now and they did say couple of weeks back that other parties are interested and that’s why I put down 10k holding deposit…

Should I still ask for the total back ? Or tell them to deduct something?

Full refund. And show some interest in his other cars, but tell him that the deal is off, and that you refuse to talk with him about alternatives before the money is in the bank.

Dont feel uncomfortable, its your money and i can promise they dont give a rats arse about you, they wanted to extract as much money as possible from you and thats all they care about, they are probably lying if they told you other parties were interested, thats the oldest trick in the book.

Fight for your 10k. dont even offer a deduction, BE FIRM OP,BE FIRM.

Smash and Grab should be the only consideration from that list as it makes a huge difference in keeping the car cool.

However before you piss your money away go have a good and deep look at the windows and check that it’s not already fitted to the car.

I’ve had two different dealers on two occasions trying to sell me smash and grab on demo models that already had it.

Sometimes the insurance premiums are based on the tracker.
Yes but it's minimal. Sometimes better not to have one at all since you're paying a separate premium to track the vehicle over and above insurance.
But it's a good to have of you suspect the wife of putting in "extra mileage" elsewhere.

I had a Toyota kluger once… petrol engine….. drove like a dream ….

I am not too concerned with mileage difference … for all the reasons you mentioned … no wonder diesel models are expensive…

Assume I won’t have issue selling either of petroleum or diesel 12-18 months down the track!!

Thanks everyone for very helpful advice….

I will be going for petrol Fortuner after doing some research ….. diesel certainly better options if it’s new…. But for 10 year old… petrol is a safe bet……fuel expensive but purchase price 10-15% lower as well…

Edit: spoken too the dealer…. The car is pre owned by two ppl … and has full history but not franchise one… he said something likely rmit service…he said car in good condition and open for inspection if I want …

Would you buy

Guessing he meant RMI which means it’s been serviced at reputable workshops and not some backyard mechanic.

Could only say if I would buy after driving it myself.

Yes that’s what he said….

My main concern is the value it will hold as I need to sell after 12-18 months…. Even if I get 220-230k back after a year after paying 299k now…. I will be fine…. Do you think my expectations are reasonable?

It being done at an RMI dealer is somewhat expected out of warranty and as long as it’s done as per schedule etc it’s generally not an issue.

Beyond a certain mileage people care less and less about that.

As for depreciation it’s all a lucky draw these days, but yea I wouldn’t call that unreasonable.

Both petrol engines…. Prado 2010 model, 210k on clock….asking 320k

Fortuner: 2012 model, 130k on clock…. Only thing I don’t like in here is colour of seats…. Looks like creamish for a silver colour car….asking 300k

Use: Approx. 15k a year usage…

Idea to sell in 12-18 months…

Any guidance on choice please

Take the prado before it disappears, it’s a great car and a proper suv, prado also havs a dual vvti engine so it will be more powerful, fortuner only has single vvti.

Only problem with the prado is the kdss suspension, they tend to lean on one side by a few centimetres over time. So look out for that.
