Yes, it's only FP1 but it's already looking ominous for any car that isn't called a Silver Arrow with a three pointed star as it's main logo.

I don't understand why McLaren ditched their ties to MB/AMG

Mercedes wanted more and more control over McLaren while McLaren wanted to retain their independence, hence Merc purchased Brawn.

"They continuously over the years wanted to have control of McLaren and we continuously told them we did not want them to have control of McLaren.

"The more they wanted it, the less we wanted to give it to them. Because you look at what happens... the influence they [car manufacturers] control is not always productive. CEOs change overnight. I have got 30-odd years of my life in this company, huge quantities of friends and people who have been through thick and thin with me, and I made it very clear to Mercedes-Benz, as did the other shareholders, that we are not for sale. They hankered always."

...

"They got exactly what they wanted: a grand prix team they had complete control over - and we had continuous engine supply and the ability to promote our product and build the McLaren brand.

"It was just a win-win situation. In the end, obviously, when we all realised this was going to happen, it was all very logical."

The article is from 2010, things didn't pan out the way they had hoped it would.

I knew they had guys back at HQ helping out, but I never realised it was on such a scale.

The sound bite where they asked someone to watch what the Ferrari's were doing in a specific sector, some serious analytics going on there.
I'd work weekends for that job lol

Just heard that Torro Rosso will be running the new Honda engine this weekend... .5s faster per lap estimated. Let's see.

Vettel could have been 70 points clear of Hamilton at this point bar some errors.
He certainly had the car.

Its amazing that it took Merc so long to figure out whatever Ferrari’s performance trick was though, they don’t seem to have that performance advantage anymore.

I wonder if it was devious cheating trickery with the second battery or just the better utilisation of the MGU-H?

I suppose we’ll never know for sure.

It is a sad state of affairs. 25-years ago the cars 17th through 20th would've been slugging it out at the top of the time sheets.
I can't remember that far back but my earliest memories always had backrunners ( think back minardi)
