Is Russell a pay driver? Does he come with massive financial backing?

He's a Mercedes driver, same as Ocon, Werhlein, etc.

but why take a n00b instead of a proven, quick driver, unless there was $$$ involved. I'm so pissed off with this team, supporting them for 20+ years and they just keep making stupid decisions and going backwards

Why don’t you wait for the announcement of their other driver before having a tantrum?

erm, they can't get rid of Sirotkin because of the amount of $ he brings to the team.

Also, **** Toto Wolff, he's rapidly ruining F1 with his shitty team orders and manipulation of the drivers' market

Do you have any links to show that’s definitely the current facts? Or are you just making stuff up to feed your little attack of outrage? You sound like you’re about 14 years old...

Again, maybe wait and see what is announced before having a tantrum, save all the indignation for when it might actually be required.

this is such a joke - they overlooked Ocon for a n00b??? How the F are they going to develop their car with this kind of nonsense???

The second seat isn't confirmed but it is likely to be Sirotkin or another pay-driver of unknown ability. I'm still hoping that it is Ocon with a sweetener from Mercedes.

To be fair to Russell, he's a lot more developed than Stroll was and he has worked his way up the ladder.

- 2014 British F4 Champion
- Two seasons in European F3, finishing 3rd overall in 2016
- 2017 GP3 Champion
- Currently leading the F2 Championship

He could enter the sport having won both of F1's support series on the trot.

Stroll on the other hand had all of 3 seasons in open-wheel racing and jumped straight from Euro F3 in to F1.

I don't think there is a problem with signing Russell. The problem for Williams will be who is in the second car. On pedigree I'd take take Russell and experience over Sirotkin and experience. Russell and Sirotkin will likely be another difficult season though.

Agreed, Russell getting the nod might be an indication that Merc are taking a bit more interest in the team again, that could only be good for Williams.

Noobs are way more affordable and Williams don't have buckets of cash, besides, Russel is talented.

Seems like Seb isn't the only Ferrari driver who likes driving into other cars :p

Raikkonen fined for colliding with parked car in Switzerland

Mastering daunting street courses at breakneck speeds while racing against the world's top drivers does not necessarily mean you can handle a tranquil Swiss parking lot. Just ask Formula 1 star Kimi Raikkonen. The Finnish former F1 champion has been ordered to pay a fine of 350 Swiss francs ($353, 304 euros) after crashing into a parked car in his hometown of Baar, in the northern Canton of Zug, Switzerland's ATS news agency reported Friday. The agency said the incident in May occurred when Raikkonen veered to avoid an oncoming vehicle and collided with a car parked to his right. Raikkonen will also be responsible for a 450-franc administrative fee, according to ATS. Police in Zug did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Raikkonen learned last month that his team Ferrari will not be retaining his services for 2019. The Finn will move to Sauber for at least the next two seasons.

More on Russell:

Williams confirms Russell for 2019
Williams has confirmed the appointment of 2018 F2 champion elect George Russell as one of its drivers for 2019.
The 20-year-old Briton will make his F1 race debut at the Australian Grand Prix and joins Williams with an impressive racing résumé.

Following a successful start to his career in karting, Russell stepped in to single seater racing in 2014, winning the BRDC Formula 4 Championship at his first attempt as well as becoming the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award winner.

He progressed to the Formula 3 European Championship for two seasons, and then went onto win the GP3 championship in his rookie 2017 season with two races to spare.

He stepped up to the FIA Formula 2 Championship this year, which he is currently leading, whilst also fulfilling a test and reserve Driver role for Mercedes.

"It is a huge honour to join a team of Williams' prestige and heritage," said Russell. "Formula One has been a life-long dream. From watching the races when I was a child, it feels surreal that I will now be lining up on the grid, alongside drivers whom I have admired for years. I would like to thank Claire and everyone at Williams for their faith in making this decision, as well as Toto and the team at Mercedes for their fantastic support throughout GP3 and Formula 2.

"I am incredibly excited to start working with everyone at Grove and to take my first steps as a Formula One race driver. I cannot wait for Melbourne next year and to join Williams at the start of what we all believe will be the start of an exciting new journey."

"I am delighted to announce that George Russell will be joining Williams from the 2019 season," added Claire Williams. "We have always tried to promote and develop young talent at Williams, and George fits that ethos perfectly. He is already highly regarded in the paddock and a driver whose career we have been watching for a while.

"In the time we have spent with him so far, we believe that he will be a great fit for our team; his commitment, passion and dedication is exactly what we need to drive the positive momentum building at Grove as we focus on the future. We are extremely excited to welcome George and work with him moving forward."

Russell, who became part of Mercedes junior driver programme in January 2017, subsequently drove both days of the post-Hungary GP test for the German team, making his F1 GP weekend debut in Brazil with Force India and subsequently participating in FP1 in Abu Dhabi with the Silverstone-based outfit.

This year he has taken part in tests with both Mercedes and Force India, topping the timesheets in the post-Hungary test with the German team.

Williams has yet to reveal the identity of its second driver, with Sergey Sirotkin, Robert Kubica, Artem Markelov and Esteban Ocon all linked with the Grove outfit.
