They should leave the wheels off on the grid for the race...

Have the drivers all lined up. Then have somebody blow a whistle, and the drivers run towards their cars. The pit crew will then quickly have to put the wheels on, and then off they go.

Sometimes i just miss the old days of a 1hour qualifying session. 2 different tyre manufacturers, pit when you need to. Fuel the car up light or heavy depending on strategy.. see engines blow up just meters from the finish line. Aah those were the days

Formula 1 considering sprint race for qualifying

I'm extremely sceptical, they only get 3 engines for the season, what team is going to go full throttle racing for 100km just for a qualifying place? it'll be like the last attempt to spice up qualifying, an empty track or driving like grannies...

1 hour qualifying was just so much better honestly.

It was, but even that probably wouldn't work anymore. The big teams would go out and set a time and pit and go back out with 5 minutes left to do another lap.

Qualifying is 90% about looking after the engines now, and 10% racing. How many really hot laps do the big teams do in qualifying now? 3? 4?

Yeh sure, but the hour qualifying would do well for the rest of the teams. Right now, those teams are stretched to the max trying to make it into the top 10. They only have a few chances, and cannot afford any mistakes. At least with the hour, they can still surprise a few.

Yeah, the 1-hour qualifying sessions really weren't that great.

The first few minutes of the session saw the likes of Minardi and Arrows running around getting TV time for their sponsors then it went dead. After that there was the odd flurry of cars and maybe you'd see a Ferrari or McLaren 20 minutes in to the session. Everything happened in the final 15/20-minutes when the track was at its best, with the drivers trying to leave their final runs until the last possible second.

This is why we have qualifying the way it was now. They just want to replicate the final 15/20-minute mad dash.

Also on our flight were Martin Brundle, Carlos Sainz, Brendon Hartley, and numerous Sauber crew.

Haha, I didn't chance a hello with him as he looked mighty grumpy

Does he ever not lol. I'm a Hartley fan, I just don't think he's the right fit for F1 though - or perhaps F1 isn't the right fit for him. Maybe he will settle.

Nice shots.
The teams certainly let you get up close.
Yep, but this was the F1 Experience pit walk, so fewer people.

I took some really nice zoomed-in photos of the cars in pieces with my DSLR, but will only be able to upload them once I am back home.

Dude, if you can get a pic of yourself sitting in a car, I will worship you as a god amongst men! :D

Did you win a prize or did you pay for this all yourself?

Err, not a prize?

Plenty of Saffers here as well, including the ZA rep for F1 Experience - good contact to have for future GPs DSC_0167.jpg
