Formula 1 tables its proposals for 2021

Formula1.com

Today in a meeting held at the Bahrain International Circuit, Formula 1 presented the teams and the FIA its proposals for the future of the sport from 2021 onwards.

Chase Carey, Chairman and CEO at Formula 1, said:

“Formula 1 is a sport with a rich history. We want to preserve, protect and enhance that history by unleashing F1s potential, by putting our fans at the heart of a more competitive and more exciting sport. We are driven by one desire: to create the world’s leading sporting brand. Fan- centred, commercially successful, profitable for our teams, and with technological innovation at its heart.”

*

Key strategic initiatives

Power units (PU)

The PU must be cheaper, simpler, louder, have more power and reduce the necessity of grid penalties. It must remain road relevant, hybrid and allow manufacturers to build unique and original PU.New PU rules must be attractive for new entrants and Customer teams must have access to equivalent performance.

Costs

We believe how*you spend the money must be more decisive and important than how much money you spend. While there will be some standardised elements, car differentiation must remain a core valueImplement a cost cap that maintains Formula 1 position as the pinnacle of motorsport with a state-of-the-art technology.

Revenues

The*new revenue distribution criteria must be more balanced, based on meritocracy of the current performance and reward success for the teams and the Commercial* * Rights Holder.F1s*unique, historical*franchise and value must and will still be recognised.Revenue support to both cars and engine suppliers.

Sporting and technical rules & regulations

We must make cars more raceable to increase overtaking opportunities.Engineering technology must remain a cornerstone but driver’s skill must be the predominant factor in the performance of the car.The cars*must and will remain different from each other and maintain performance differentiators like aerodynamics, suspensions and PU performance. However, we believe areas not relevant to fans need to be standardised.

Governance

A simple and streamline structure between the teams, the FIA and Formula 1.

Seems quite expensive.
It is. But after FP2, we get to visit a team's garage, and get to hang out with Charles Leclerc (was supposed to be Kubica, but something else came up)

^^Recommend cleaning the camera lens, it looks like you might have a fingerprint or two on it - hence the flare. Could also be the desert dust in the air, but I suspect it's the lens - happens to me all the time. Very cool pics BTW!

Monaco & Russia to ignore 'grid girl' ban

Monaco and Russia look set to buck the trend and bring 'grid girls' back to formula one.

Before the 2018 season began, F1 owner Liberty Media said grid girls will be banned, and replaced on the grid by children or 'grid kids'.

But Monaco grand prix boss Michel Boeri said there will be grid girls at the fabled street race next month.

"We've had no problems with Liberty Media, except for the grid girl issue," he told Monaco-Matin newspaper.

"They'll be there, on the grid, but won't be holding any name boards. They'll at least be communication hostesses.

"They're beautiful, and the cameras will be on them once again."

Boeri said he fundamentally disagrees with F1 chiefs who believe grid girls do not belong in the modern world.

"Our American friends assume it hurts female feelings, but our hostesses go to modelling and PR schools and they're paid well," he insisted.

"Why in the world should I stop 30 women from earning a living?"

Another race that could ignore the grid girl ban is Russia, with organiser Dmitry Kozak saying women could be on the grid at Sochi in September.

"Children are appropriate in football, but in the automotive industry there were always girls and it looked quite appropriate," he told the Russian media.

"If we manage to come to an agreement with Liberty, we will try to revive this tradition. Moreover, our girls are the most beautiful," Kozak smiled.

What did I miss?

New gearbox.

https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/135218/hamilton-gets-grid-penalty-for-bahrain-gp

Lewis Hamilton is set for a five-place grid penalty at the Bahrain Grand Prix as the result of a gearbox change.

The FIA revealed on Friday night that Hamilton's car would be fitted with a new gearbox from Saturday's final free practice session.

With this change coming before the mandatory six events are up, it means Hamilton will be moved down the order for the start on Sunday.

Team-mate Valtteri Bottas is also having a new gearbox fitted, but as he already had a gearbox change penalty in Australia following his qualifying crash he is allowed a free change for this weekend's race.

A Mercedes insider confirmed that Hamilton's gearbox had suffered a hydraulic leak during the race in Australia.

It was only when it was inspected in the Bahrain paddock this week, under FIA supervision, that bearing damage was discovered, and the team has decided that it would have been too risky to use the gearbox again.

Meanwhile Bottas's change is a routine one that every team is allowed to make after it has replaced a damaged gearbox at the previous event.

Hamilton had come into the Bahrain weekend eager to make up for defeat at the Australian Grand Prix, when Sebastian Vettel was able to beat him thanks to a well-timed pitstop under virtual safety car conditions.

But after a Friday when it appeared that Ferrari had the edge, news of the gearbox penalty will leave the world champion facing an even bigger challenge to not lose more ground in the standings.

Mercedes technical director James Allison admitted after practice the team was not as comfortable with its performance as it had been at the Melbourne season opener.

"It wasn't our best day from a performance point of view," he said.

"We've got more to do overnight and in the session tomorrow to give us a car that will allow us to have a good fight in qualifying and on Sunday.

"The base is OK but we have not yet found the sort of edge that we had in Melbourne."
