Does that show that Merc is now backing Lewis for the title? Bottas wanted softs for his last stint to try chase Lewis down but Merc seemingly overruled him...?

The softs weren't competitive (look at Perez) and there were still around 26 laps when he asked for them, which was pushing it, imo.

Wasn't fastest lap set on the hard tyre in the end?

Yeah agreed. In hindsight it was the right call.

I am a Hamilton fan and have been since he was in F2 (GP2 back then) and am just as chuffed as all his other Fans at his achievement, and I would certainly say he is G.O.H.T. (Greatest of His Time) but G.O.A.T is a difficult if not impossible target for any one. He is racing in different equipment on different tracks with greatly improved safety.

I don't miss the days when F1 life expectancy was short but how many of the drivers who died young would have been able to do what Hamilton has achieved if they had raced in this generation and lived to achieve more?

Back in those days you "Quit whist you were ahead" nobody has sufficient death wish to push on too far and no body had a chance to drive until they were too old to drive.

No, you can't compare a man driving a 1970's F1 car on a track with hay bails as barriers and rubber bladders as fuel tanks with a modern driver in a Carbon-fibre monocoque with a Kevlar suit on and a track designed to avoid accidents.

Not only is the technology different the entire environment is different and as such so is the sport and the challenge.

Chuck Yeager is as much as much of a hero for breaking the sound barrier or fling a jet into the stratosphere as the Astronauts were for flying to the moon. different technology in a different environments but still the same test pilots.

Watching the Stirling Moss segment on tonight's Top Gear showed just how dangerous it used to be.

Except GOAT is pure opinionated speculation wherever it's used.
