In other words: an excellent no 2
In a way yes. In another way, no. Ideally the number 2 would be the inexperience rookie who will replace the aging number 1 when he retires. Bottas isn't that guy. Russell is that guy. Bottas is the other guy.

Yes, he got screwed by the pit stop, but then he lost time and finished way off the leaders. Russell needs that seat.

It causes a lot of stress and internal politics when you pair up two classy drivers.

There is also a good reason why Ferrari chose Bottas level drivers like Barichello, Massa and Irvine to partner Schumi in his era of dominance.

Also, I'm sure Merc would not want another Hamilton vs Nico saga again but Hamilton must be kind of tired now so I just have a feeling he might allow a younger driver to get the edge if he gets a new team-mate.

I guess nothing changes. Only thing different is the distinct lack of "itS OnLy tHe cAr" meme

F1 is probably about 70% the car. The driver makes a difference, but maybe 2-3 positions at most.

With that being said though, Hamilton is the best on the grid in terms of pure ability and he has got nothing left to prove in this sport.

@Icemanbrfc did you see Charl just confirm on camera that the drivers COULD cross all 4 wheels off the track at turn 4 without penalty? Or did you happen to miss that part?

Our definition of no 2 must be different. On my world a no 2 is somebody who is in everybody's way but not good enough to be in your way. A patsy, a moving bollard, somebody invisible.

Yea, I just don't like that idea really. it does describe Bottas to a T though.

It doesn’t really help the argument.

27.3 Drivers must make every reasonable effort to use the track at all times and may not deliberately leave the track without a justifiable reason.

Drivers will be judged to have left the track if no part of the car remains in contact with it and, for the avoidance of doubt, any white lines defining the track edges are considered to be part of the track but the kerbs are not.

Should a car leave the track the driver may re-join, however, this may only be done when it is safe to do so and without gaining any lasting advantage. At the absolute discretion of the race director a driver may be given the opportunity to give back the whole of any advantage he gained by leaving the track.

It depends on what counts as reasonable, doesn’t it?
Something tells me that exceeding track limits for the majority of the first ±40 laps does not equal a reasonable effort.
But I'd hardly call the FIA reasonable so there is that to consider :p

I have a feeling Hamilton might just take a back seat and allow Russell to get priority if they team up. Either that or he might just go to a mid-field team, possibly a return to McLaren if there is a spot available there.

Lol, someone is sour.

I was also not the biggest fan of Lewis initially but he's a far better role-model and Champ than Michael Schumacher was.

Anyone who doubts Hamilton's ability has to have a look at his rookie season. I'm not sure if a rookie will ever challenge for the title again yet alone record four wins in his rookie year.

It's not like he was making rookie errors either, he was driving better than guys like JP Montoya and Ralf Schumacher who were veterans of the game at that point.
