Chilton to be Marussia's sole entrant in Russia

Marussia will field just one car, for Briton Max Chilton, in this weekend's 2014 Formula 1 Russian Grand Prix out of respect for Jules Bianchi, who remains in hospital in Japan.

The team said in a statement that they felt strongly that fielding a single car was "the appropriate course of action under the difficult circumstances of the weekend."

Bianchi remains in a critical but stable condition following his crash at Suzuka last weekend, and though Marussia registered reserve driver Alexander Rossi on the official Sochi entry list in the Frenchman's place, they eventually decided not to run the American rookie.

"I don't know how to put into words how truly devastated I am by what has happened to Jules," Chilton said. "The support from the F1 family has been incredible and all we can do is be there to support Jules' family at this difficult time.

"It is going to be a very emotional weekend for the whole team, but we will try to get through it and keep praying for Jules."

Marussia's cars and team personnel will sport a #JB17 graphic throughout the weekend in Russia in tribute to Bianchi. A statement said the gesture ensures that "although Jules is not with them in Sochi this weekend, he is, nonetheless, racing on with the Marussia F1 Team."

Twenty one cars will therefore contest this weekend's inaugural world championship race in Russia.

Yes, i just read that also. I am not in agreement that its the correct thing to do, but ja.

If that was me fighting for my life, i would want the best person to go out on my behalf and give it their best possible try.

Anyway nuff said.

Lotus confirms switch to Mercedes power

Lotus has confirmed its switch to Mercedes power next season with a long-term supply deal in place.

The team currently runs Renault engines, and until 2010 was owned by the French manufacturer, but is switching to Mercedes next year. Mercedes has the most successful power unit under the new V6 turbo regulations and currently supplies four of the top six teams in the constructors' championship.

Lotus has struggled for performance and reliability this year and is hoping the switch to Mercedes power will bring future success.

"We are pleased to have been chosen by Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains in a significant long term deal," Lotus CEO Matthew Carter said. "We intend to return to the front of the field with the goals of winning Grands Prix and being a strong championship contender once more and we see this new agreement as one step towards this aim.

"The Mercedes-Benz Power Unit has shown good performance on track and it is our goal to marry this motive force to Enstone's chassis expertise. It is our desire that the E23 Hybrid, powered by Mercedes-Benz, heralds a new era of success for Enstone. At this juncture we would also like to thank Renault, who have been so closely associated with the team over its history and for the joint success we have achieved together."

McLaren is set to switch from Mercedes to Honda power next year, meaning the addition of Lotus will ensure the German manufacturer still has three customers.

Maybe, hopefully, this will lift their game.

Interesting looking track, but not particularly exciting. Looks like it could be another Valencia (without the seaside vistas). I don't foresee a particularly enthralling race on Sunday to be honest. Hope I'm wrong though...

This track reminds me a bit of China for some odd reason, but cannot put my finger on it.

Or Bahrain, bar the absence of sand.

Well, based on their current performance in FP1 (and indeed their 2014 season), they could use the Merc power. Grosjean even coming on the radio complaining of lack of power. Currently 2.5 seconds down on the factory Mercs.
