They go away for 3 weeks, come back to entertain with back to back races. This weekend is last of the European season though.

I kinda like the western races, watching a race on a Sunday night is a hellova treat and lot better than the movie.

I want to see if the Tifosi boycot this one. They're passionate... both ways.

I doubt they'd even think of doing that. They're the most dedicated fans of the sport. They didn't even turn their back during the awful spell in the early 90s when they won 2 races in the span of 5-years.

some 2017 tid bits

2017 to kick off with back-to-back races?

The provisional calendar for 2017 sees Australian and Chinese Grands Prix held back-to-back.

The calendar sees the season kick off in Melbourne on 26 March before heading to Shanghai a week later.

The late start to the season at least gives the teams time to prepare though there is concern as to whether, following the season opener, they can turns things around in time for the trip to China especially as Melbourne has a reputation for attrition.

Contrary to previous reports, the schedule, which will be submitted to the World Motor Sport Council when it meets in late September, includes 21 races, though there remains a question mark over Hockenheim.

For the first time in several years, no new races are scheduled to make their debut on the calendar, even though events in Las Vegas, Imola, and even Paul Ricard, have been mooted.

While there are a total of five double-headers over the course of the season, the opening rounds after China - Bahrain, Russian Spain and Monaco - are held at bi-weekly intervals, the jewel in the crown event at the Principality to be held on the last weekend of May.
With its much publicised financial difficulties, and his failure to buy the Nurburgring, Hockenheim's inclusion, gives credence to claims that Bernie Ecclestone could be involved in the promotion of the event or even secure a special deal with the circuit owners.

Indeed, in light of the ongoing problems at Silverstone, not to mention Monza's failure to agree a new deal, a number of races are under threat in the long-term as the full impact of the 10% year-on-year increase in hosting fees takes effect.

With promoters feeling the squeeze, in many cases, as in Germany, because attendance is down, some claim that Ecclestone might seek to redress the situation by increasing the cost of TV deals, though the declining viewing figures suggest that this might not provide the solution.

Much, therefore, will rest on whether the sport has got it right and F1 2017-style is faster, noisier, more aggressive and sexier.

How insane was the banking on the original Monza layout? 36-degrees to be exact. 3.5-degrees steeper than the Talladega Superspeedway in the US.

The below footage was shot for the movie Grand Prix but it gives you an idea of how intimidating that track was.

Massa to retire at end of season

Brazilian Felipe Massa announced on Thursday that he will retire from Formula One at the end of the season.

The 35-year-old Williams driver, who won 11 races for Ferrari between 2006 and 2008 and finished overall runner-up to Lewis Hamilton in the 2008 world championship, is out of contract at the end of the year.

"After 15 years in Formula One...this will be my last season," Massa told reporters at the Italian Grand Prix.

Massa, who survived a near-fatal head injury in Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying in 2009, joined former champions Williams from Ferrari in 2014.

You ninja'd me.

Besides the clear decline in speed with age, he was never the same after his Hungary accident. Nevertheless, he had a long, productive career and was a mere two corners away from being a world champion.

Agreed. He was a loyal servant to F1 and I wish him well. I really hope Williams gets a marquee signing for next year. I'd love to see Alonso there but with McLaren in the ascendancy and Williams in seeming decline, I doubt it'll happen.

Button to Williams for one or two last seasons, Vandoorne into the Macca race seat... I don't think sir Frank can afford Alonso.

Here's one out of left field... Maldonado back with his Venezuelan millions?

As long as the Martini deal is in place Williams don't need to be looking at pay drivers.

I'd go for Wehrlein and then see what happens with Bottas, Button and Hulkenberg in terms of a senior driver.

Opens the gates now.

Button to Williams to partner with Bottas. Van Doorne to get the call up to the eerste span.

Jolyon Palmer should say goodbye to his seat at Renault if Perez decides to take his Telmex money to Renault.
