Tbh. i hope we get some next gen talent from the lower formula teams.

I cannot really recall a pay driver that has made a success in F1.

Depends on how you define a pay driver.

Mercedes paid Jordan $150,000 to sign Michael for the 1991 Belgian Grand Prix.

Nicki Lauda took bank loans to buy his seats at March and BRM before close friend and Ferrari favourite Clay Regazzoni convinced Enzo Ferrari to sign him.

Flavio Briatore paid for Alonso's seat at Minardi in 2001. Then there are his connections with Santander (McLaren, Ferrari and McLaren) and Telefonica (Renault).

Hmm, maybe the 'Button to Williams' move is not so cut and dried...

Dithering may have cost Button a Williams seat

Although many reckon Thursday’s announced that Felipe Massa is quitting F1 has opened the door for Jenson Button to return to Williams, some reports suggest otherwise.

Williams stated earlier this season that 2009 World Champion was an “attractive” option for next year’s championship as Formula 1 embraces a host of new technical regulations.

However, weeks later, they have perhaps changed their opinion.

According to the Daily Mail, the ‘Williams hierarchy have tired of Button’s dithering over his future’ and have decided to go another route.

“If he had been banging the doors down then it might have worked,” an insider told the publication. “But that’s not been the case.”

As for Button, he says his future remains undecided.

Speaking about Massa’s decision to quit in Thursday’s press conference he said: “We all have our own reasons. I think it’s a brave decision but he’s chosen to retire so it’s definitely the right one.”

Asked his plans are coming along, he replied: “That’s progressing well as well. So, progress is the name of the game? So it’s good.”

Oh, so the second Williams seat is still vacant? Very interesting! Maybe someone like Pascal Wehrlein to join Bottas then?

Button and Alonso are joined by Stoffel Vandoorne who will race alongside Alonso with Button testing and developing the car. Woohoo! Now all they need is a good car :/

That's the hard part for them :p

Not sure this is innovative, unless he will always be driving in free practice. Sounds like he is a regular test and back up driver
Yes, I wasn't sure what they were trying to say about being innovative - other than making a test driver a race driver and giving a former WC a test position. Button is one of the better setup guys to have iirc.
