He isn't going to be their test driver, the announcement said brand ambassador and reserve driver.

Jenson Button will not race in Formula 1 in 2017 but will remain with McLaren as an ambassador.

The 2009 world champion will work with the team and could race again in 2018, having signed a two-year contract.

Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne will be promoted from reserve driver to partner double world champion Fernando Alonso.

Button said that after racing in F1 since 2000 he had come to the conclusion over the summer break in August that he wanted to take a break.

He and McLaren chairman Ron Dennis devised what the 69-year-old described as an "innovative" solution to the problem to keep all their options open for the future.

Button will be McLaren's reserve driver, and will race if either Alonso or Vandoorne are unable to for any reason.

The 36-year-old will do work in McLaren's simulator, attend a number of races to work with the team, maintain an F1 level of fitness and "remain current", as he put it.

"There are many things I want to do that I haven't been able to do because of the F1 schedule," Button said. "When you drive in F1, it is your life, and I definitely need a break from that in 2017.

"In 2018 the team have an option on me to race for McLaren-Honda, which is pretty awesome.

So, as I read it, unless something happens to Alonso or Vandoorne, he won't be driving at all next year.

From the link I posted:

“Having extended his contract to include 2017 and 2018, he’ll continue to be a senior, influential and committed member of the team, and will remain centrally involved in the development of our cars. He’ll also be available to race for us if circumstances require it.

“On behalf of all at McLaren-Honda, I want to say how thrilled we are that Jenson has extended his contractual relationship with us. Moreover, I’m absolutely certain that the depth of his experience and the currency of his expertise will give us an advantage over our opposition next season.

According to Ted at the end of this Notebook Episode, Jenson is unlikely to even be at the races next year, most likely he will be in California, with his latest squeeze, waiting to be called up.

I think he should have gone to Williams, they gave him his start, he could have returned them the favor, but I guess this way he has a graceful exit and gets payed more than Williams could afford.

That seems to say the same, he will only race if circumstances require (ie if the other drivers aren't able to).

Well he's not going to race - that's clear... Other than backup, but you don't develop the car without getting into it...

They were part of the trouble with his career. They hung onto him but palmed him off to other teams while he was under contract to them. He got a P2 in the WC in a crappy BAR. Don't think they did him too many favors.

Or if Alonso starts throwing his toys again.

The Alonso example was given by someone who was interviewed (might have been Eddie Jordan??), they inferred keeping JB was an insurance against Alonso walking if the car hadn't improved sufficiently next season.

Hamilton butchered his start and was playing catchup for the rest of the race.

Hamilton. 2007?

Alonso and Hamilton finished with equal points in 2007.

Vettel in a Minardi?

Vettel finished 8th and Alonso in 5th in the 2008 World Championship. The Minardi name was already gone when Vettel started his F1 career. The team was called Torro Rosso for a couple of years when he left BMW and moved to Torro Rosso.

Nice race.

Not too much excitement but technically everyone worked hard.

Great drive from Rosberg.

Haha, and a fastest lap from Mclaren.
Where the f did that come from.

Another gem from Alonso.

[Race engineer:] Okay, Fernando, let’s keep the pace going strong ‘til the end. Grosjean is still out there on eighteen-lap-old option [tires], he may come towards us.

[Alonso:] HAHAHAHA!

All I can say is thank goodness for the Silverstone MotoGP being on the same weekend.

Bwahaha. Joking I asume. They ended up equal on points during that year. They both got beaten by a Finnish driver oddly enough.

Alonso went into a melt down and threw his toys after being matched by a rookie, now imagine what he is going to do if he actually gets beaten by Stoffel Vandoorne. No wonder Ron is keeping JB on standby.
