Yupp, sad news.

Very unlikely that they will recover, even with whatever Bernie thinks up with his 3rd car rule.

The articles on the F1 sites are very correct, like this one http://en.espnf1.com/fia/motorsport/story/180997.html

The money distribution must be more fair. This in its own right would ensure more longevity. In any event the top teams are so highly endorsed by sponsors.

Anyone remember the HKS 300E V12 F1 engine? Was tested in the early 1990's but never raced.

That is quite impressive. That is what I liked about F1 immediately after the turbo era, there were a lot of people and companies having a go at coming up with engines to meet demand, as well as a ton of new teams. Granted, most were fly-by-nighters, but still, they got to live the dream for a bit. Can't see that happening now.

Is it because of the costs (development, building, etc) ?

I see Marussia fell into administration today as well. Down to 9 teams

Not good for their image in the States. The last time they were there it was a 6-car race. Now, they are guaranteed the smallest F1 grid since 2005.

Qualifying will be particularly barren as aside from no Marussias and Caterhams, Vettel will sit qualifying out because of an engine penalty, so only 17-cars will contest qualifying.

which means only one car will drop out after q1

Cost and technology, in my opinion. Even the privateer engine builders don't try anymore. I'm sure you've heard of John Judd and his Judd engines? Privateer engine builder that started out tuning Repcos and Cosworths for Brabham before building his own units.

As for the teams, definitely costs as well as tighter controls. Some of the teams that appeared post-turbo ear were real chancers or just came in with horrible business plans. Andrea Moda being the most infamous of the lot.

Yes, especially now that KERS and TERS are involved, only really meant for high profile engine supply.

Does have some pros and cons though.

In my opinion the greatest driver to never win a championship going back the last 20-years and I personally rank him ahead of champions Button and Villeneuve.

Searching for positives here; Their saving grace may be the fact that they are now guaranteed a top-10 spot in the championship, which means at least $40 million in prize money. The prize money makes them a helluva lot more attractive than Caterham, who will get sweet blow all. A potential buyer will look at this. The prize money will just about cover the entrance fee for 2015, so the buyer won't have to buy a team and then still come up with the entrance fee. Also, if Caterham goes bust and you buy Marussia, you are pretty much guaranteed a top-10 spot again next season, even if you do not score points, so more prize money again next season.

Marussia still have hope but Caterham are pretty much pooped.

Point made, yes.

Minardi were also once nowhere, and now a competitive Toro Rosso team.

I wish they'd have kept the name. I know there was a petition at the time for them to at least keep the name. They were a very popular team, despite their lack of results.

Yes they were, very popular, i think because they produced many racing greats. When i say produced i mean brought into F1. Just realized even Mark Webber drove for them.

So, anyone on the forum interested in the more technical aspects of F1? Like engine and car design, aerodynamics, etc...
