Hey bro, if a bunch of companies were willing to put me in a Marussia or a Caterham for a season I'd take it. Since 1950 only 750 drivers have taken part in a Grand Prix race. That is a select club.

Some people just never hit the big time though - partnering with the right team. Button is one - like him or not, the poor guy has always had a bum deal. For how long wasn't he seconded to another second rate team?

I'm really glad he's at least had a ride in a championship winning car.

TBH, if i wasnt gonna make it big in F1, i am not sure if i'd like to be remembered as someone who nomaded teams but never made big time (like Trulli as example, or Panis) or a famous # 2 (Rubens, Webber, etc).

In fairness, BAR and later Honda did commit to Button and it culminated in a championship. The Brawn was by all means a Honda chassis. After smashing Villeneuve to pieces in 2003 they got behind him and he lead the team under its various guises for the next 6 years.

Williams and Renault done him in though. One wonders if his reliability and consistency would've seen Williams win either of the championships - and maybe even both - in 2003. Montoya and Ralf were fast on their day and more than a match for Michael, but neither had the consistency of a champion.

Panis is a great ''what if''. He had a helluva start to the 1997 season and Villeneuve sited him as a legitimate threat. Then he smashed his legs up, wasn't the same when he came back and got trapped in a dreadful car for the next two seasons, burying his career.

Webber, Rubens, DC, have nothing to be ashamed of. 750 F1 drivers in history and only 32 have been champions. They put together solid F1 careers. Also, consider the fact that their teammates at the time combined to win 12 of the last 20 world championships.

No i suppose definitely not ashamed, but there is something mildly derogatory when being a very good # 2.

Maybe its just me.

That engine in the granny wagon is a fire-breathing 3lt V10, not Alonso's puny 2.4 V8. :p

I think it looks pretty sweet. Imagine sitting at the traffic lights blipping that throttle?

I think next year, whoever is in Jhb, we should hook up one day to watch a race together.

Like a mini F1 meet.

I'd be down for that. We used to go to a pizza place called Gino's in the South as a group, but sadly folks drifted. Grab a few different pizzas, a few beers and watch the GP on a big screen. Some friendly banter with pother patrons. Was good.

So, predictions? Same as last week for me;

No rain:

1 - Hamilton
2 - Rosberg
3 - Bottas

Rain:

1 - Hamilton
2 - Rosberg
3 - Ricciardo

Williams cocks up again:

1 - Hamilton
2 - Rosberg
3 - Ricciardo

Im going to suggest this race goes to Rosberg with Hamilton in tow - it's becoming more important for Hamilton to stay out of the traffic.

I tend it agree, Hamilton can't risk Nico taking him out and he only needs two seconds to win. That said it is not in Hamilton's nature to intentionally settle for second place, he will push and try any chance he gets to overtake regardless.
