Grosjean hit with 20-place grid penalty

Romain Grosjean has been hit with a 20-place grid penalty at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which is likely to also result in time penalties during the race.

Lotus fitted a new Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), a new Turbocharger (TC) and a Motor Generator Unit -Heat (MGU-H) to his car, all of which were the sixth components of their type used by Grosjean this year. Under the regulations drivers are only allowed to use five of each engine component in their car over the season and using more incurs penalties.

The first time a sixth component is fitted the driver receives a 10-place penalty and each sixth component after that incurs a five-place penalty. As a result, Grosjean's total grid penalty adds up to 20, meaning he will start last on the grid.

But that bad news does not end there for Grosjean as power unit grid penalties that are not fully served (because the driver is closer to the back of the grid than the amount of penalty positions he incurs) are carried over to the next event. As Abu Dhabi is the final event, the FIA have ruled that any remaining grid positions will be served via time penalties during the race.

1-5 unserved grid positions will result in a five-second time penalty, 6-10 unserved positions will result in a 10-second time penalty and 11-20 will result in a drive-through penalty. Given the performance of the Lotus this season, it is unlikely Grosjean will break into the top ten which would result in a drive-through penalty during the race.

So far we have had the Williams cars body work falling apart, McLaren Hydraulic failure, Ferrari electrical failure, lotus compete Power Unit Failure...

This race is likely to go to the car that manages to finish.

Well It was a good race and I watched it, ironically, in probably the best way thanks to ESKOM.
We had a blackout just as the race was starting so I pulled out the Laptop and MyFy device and whilst the Drivers were hoping their batteries would last the Race duration so was I :)

It could be a good series, I am looking forward to the next one on Dec 13th.

Both Redbulls excluded from quali for flexing front wings.
Is this not just some wealthy sponsor organising more points for Ferrari?

Yes this is puzzling though I'm not surprised, Horner and Marko trying their antics.

Though it would have been interesting.

This is the general consensus out there, but here's an interesting fact...
(Non Ferrari) Cars have been excluded from qualifying in the past 3 years at Abu Dhabi... this year is a hattrick... coincidence? How many times have cars been excluded previously (from any other race) in those years?

2012:
Sebastian Vettel, who set a 1:41.073 qualifying time in Q3 and subsequently would have started from third position, was excluded from the qualifying results for violating the rules by not having enough fuel to return to the pits. However, the stewards allowed him to start the race from the last grid position. Red Bull opted to make set-up changes before the race, which meant that Sebastian Vettel had to start from the pit lane
Vettel came third behind the Ferrari of Alonso

2013:
Kimi Räikkönen was excluded from qualifying and was relegated to twenty-second place on the grid having originally qualified fifth place on the grid after his car failed a floor deflection test.
Kimi was ahead of the first Ferrari powered car in quali.

Want more fodder for conspiracy?

ROME, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Alitalia has lined up former Ferrari boss Luca Cordero di Montezemolo as chairman and Etihad Airways CEO James Hogan as his deputy in the new company that will be formed when the Italian airline ties up with the Abu Dhabi-based carrier, two sources close to the matter said on Thursday. Alitalia-Etihad deal still subject to European approval
Ethiad are the Abu Dhabi GP sponsors.
In a double points race, if Ferrari can beat Williams they have a good chance of leapfrogging them in the constructors championship and if Redbull struggle from the back, there are more points up for grabs.

Not being allowed to spray Champagne at the last event of the season must be frustrating for the Drivers after such a close season.
I bet MUMM are not too happy either as they lose the largest audience of the year.
But as in all things F1, Bernie's Profit counts for more than the good of the sport.
