The song's lyrics describe the title establishment as a luxury resort where "you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave."

On the surface, the song tells the tale of a weary traveler who becomes trapped in a nightmarish luxury hotel that at first appeared inviting and tempting.

The song is an allegory about hedonism and self-destruction in the Southern California music industry of the late 1970s; Don Henley called it "our interpretation of the high life in Los Angeles" and later reiterated "it's basically a song about the dark underbelly of the American dream and about excess in America, which is something we knew a lot about."

How many of us checked into Facebook, thought we'd checked out again, and found that you can never leave?

Makes me wonder if the profile I 'deleted' (or did I really??) actually died; and I really did try to kill the damn thing. Thing is, it's gotten so entrenched that it's approaching (if it hasn't already) universal service status so, if you're not in there, you're missing out on all sorts of ways of being in contact with all sorts of people/businesses/services.

So one is faced with whether to (re)submit to the yoke of social tyranny or hold out and stay out in the cold (as it were)

The time to make the important decision is BEFORE you first sign up with Facebook. In fact... it is BEFORE you ever even get on the internet in the first place.

Cos the moment you get on the internet... it starts keeping track of you and recording little bits of your life.

If you don't want it to do that... then don't sign up.

If you choose to sign up... then remember... everything you put out there... will be there forever.

The times are changing I'm just wondering why people are so hard to accept change.

Quite, and with a "my name here" search, >I< don't exist (sure the name does, but none of them are me) for the almighty GOOG - that's something worth protecting! :p Considering I've been around ..some.. time now, I call that a reasonable feat.

It's only a matter of time before the ANC nationalizes google's database.
