Hi all,

I'm still busy studying to be a graphic designer, but at the same time I'm getting requests for websites, with their knowledge of me still being a student.

Anyhows, today I got asked if I would make a webpage for someone, one of the requirements being that they are able to upload photos to the site after I've made it. Now thats my problem. I have no idea of how to aproach that task yet.

The only idea I came up with was using a similar thing to facebook, but I dont have the first clue as to how to do that.

So basically what im wanting to do is make a page where once a user has logged in, can upload photos to the site, which will then automatically arrange say 20 photos onto a page that can be displayed to other people viewing the site.

If anyone can offer me any help, advice, or terms for what I'm trying to do so I can go and research that would be great.

Thanks in advance

You'll have to know how to do web development first if you want to build your own site to facilitate uploading photos. Any server-side scripting language will suffice (i.e. PHP, ASP.NET, Ruby, etc...). The alternative would be to use a pre-built CMS (Content Management System), of which there are numerous ones available as well. Consider using WordPress, especially since you are more inclined towards the design paradigm. Other popular CMSs include Joomla and Drupal, but I suspect they might be a bit to technical for you to setup.

A CMS will allow you to create content on the page for your client, be it a gallery, blog posts or other pieces of information. You can then also train your client to do the updates in the future without your involvement. Like I said, WordPress might be the way to go for you, seeing as its focussed on the design market these days. Just Google "Wordpress themes" and you'll see what's possible... You'll have to know quite a bit of CSS to get a decent job done though.

Good luck!

And if you go about doing this, JS for file size manipulation so all resizing can be done client side saving you sending huge files to the server only to be resized.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post and giving me some advice.

I do realise that I will have to be further in my studies to work profesionally and more effieciently.
At the moment what Im really trying to do is make a bit of a name for myself and get some experience.

Thanks a lot for everything

I think if you're a graphics designer, you should stick to *shock horror* designing graphics for sites, maybe dabble into actually cutting the designs up into CSS/HTML and leave the coding to the guys who *shock horror* codes.

I'll also ask you PRETTY please to explain this fundamental difference to the people asking you **** like this. If we can educate the world with their ignorance that a 12 year old with his MCSE is NOT a "programmer" because he "knows PC's" then my little shriveled up heart would once again pump with rainbows and butterflies!
